Hellgate: London uses the random generation of maps, monsters and money. Players may choose to either plan in third-person or first-person formats. The game is able to be played online or off-line for free, however, if players pay a small monthly fee, additional content is available. Players may play either single or multi-player games. During the multi-player games, players team up with others online to fight demons.

1. Patch 0: Released on October 31, 2007, includes an extensive recalibration of content from beta.
2. Patch 0.1: Released on November 5, 2007, it includes improved memory management code for stability as well as the first themed event for subscribers.
3. Patch 0.5: Released on November 20, 2007, includes fixes to the game and increased number of character slots for non-subscribers.
4. Patch 0.6: Released on November 29, 2007, and includes fixes to the single-player game.
5. Patch 0.7: Released on December 19, 2007, includes a revamped party system, 12 new unique items, revamped drop system, and multiple class and game changes/tweaks.
6. Patch 1.1 - Released on January 31, 2008, includes a skill retrainer item, the ability to farm major Act bosses and several Stonehenge Chronicle specific bug fixes.
7. Patch 1.1b: Released on February 14th, 2008, includes several small bug fixes and an increased difficulty to the Stonehenge Chronicles final boss monster.
8. Patch 1.2: Released on March 17, 2008, includes a new boss monster, new drops and gameplay-affecting pets.
