A heart attack occurs when a blood clot blocks one or more coronary arteries interfering with the supply of blood flow and oxygen to the heart, which can lead to an irregular heartbeat. If not treated quickly enough it will cause the affected heart muscle to die. Permanent heart damage and even death can occur if proper medical treatment is not received immediately. It takes about two months for your heart to heal after a heart attack.

Symptoms

Some of the symptoms of a heart attack include severe chest pain, sweating, nausea, vomiting, and shortness of breath. In women sometimes the signs and symptoms are different. Symptoms in women include heartburn type pain, clammy skin, dizziness and unexplained fatigue.

Risk Factors

Certain risk factors can contribute to having a heart attack. Some of these risks include smoking, high blood pressure, high cholesterol levels, not getting enough exercise, obesity, diabetes, to much stress, excessive alcohol use and a history of heart problems in your family.
