Hay fever is an allergy to pollen, dust and airborne chemicals that causes runny nose, sneezing, and itchy watery eyes. Hay fever is usually a seasonal allergy due to the increase of pollen at these times. Pollen that is light enough to be airborne is what causes most cases of hay fever. Heavier pollen moved by bees and other insects can still cause hay fever, but usually only if you come into direct contact with the plant.

The best way to control hay fever is by avoiding the cause when possible. For severe cases it is sometimes recommended to move to a different part of the country but in most case if you do move, you will develop an allergy to the new pollen in the area. Using an air conditioner and air purifiers and avoid opening windows and doors helps control hay fever. Don't dry your clothes outside as they can get pollen on them while drying. When it is necessary to be outdoors, using dust masks can also be helpful. Antihistamines and decongestants can be helpful in controlling the symptoms of hay fever.
