Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince Trailer

A new trailer for Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince was posted online on November 14, 2008. The clip opens with Dumbledore and Harry Potter meeting Professor Horace Slughorn. Slughorn then shows Potter and some students a potion. Slughorn explains that the potion causes a "powerful infatuation or obsession".¹ Ron Weasley takes the potion and immediately falls head-over-heals in love with a girl. Late in the trailer, Dumbledore shows Potter a room of vials. He explains that they are collected memories. Potter experiences one of the most important and dark memories his teacher has collected. Dumbledore goes on to explain that Potter is "the chosen" one. Moments later, Potter is flirting with a girl in the library only to be interrupted by Hermione.¹

The first official trailer for Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince was released on July 29, 2008, at 9 pm EST.² The Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince international teaser trailer appeared online on October 27, 2008. Dumbledore asks Harry Potter to protect his fellow students from a dark, powerful magic that is trying to invade the school. Over the course of the trailer, Harry battles the evil powers, disappears, is introduced to a room of other people's memories and even garners the attention of a girl.⁵

The original theatrical trailed made its debut before the premiere of The Mummy: Tomb Of The Dragon Emperor on August 1, 2008.²

The clip opens with with Dumbledore showing Harry Potter a room full of vials. They are the Dumbledore's collected memories. He pulls one from a case and asks Potter to see it. The memory he experiences, is the day Dumbledore met the child Tom Riddle. Tom Riddle explains that he has magical powers and can communicate with snakes. The trailer cuts between Tom Riddle as a boy and him as the adult wizard Voldemort. At the conclusion of the memory, Dumbledore declares that Voldemort is the most "dangerous dark wizard of all time."⁶

Young Voldemort

The Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince Movie trailer, released on July 29, 2008, features the young Tom Riddle, who grows up to become the evil Lord Voldemort (Ralph Fiennes). In the film, Riddle is portrayed by Fiennes' nephew, 10-year-old Hero Fiennes-Tiffin.⁴
