Gus Van Sant

Gus Van Sant is an American filmmaker who currently lives in Portland, Oregon. Van Sant is best known for his film Good Will Hunting, though many of his films have received popular and critical acclaim. He began his career directing television commercials in the Pacific Northwest before finding his first major success with Drugstore Cowboy. His films often deal with young people and youth identity crisis. His films are also characterized by their unflinchingly honest portrayals of subculture groups and their refusal to provide positive role models. Van Sant was nominated for one Academy Award for his work on Good Will Hunting, and has won several other awards including the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival and the Vision Award at the Toronto Film Festival.
