Gregory Stuart Dobbs was born in Los Angeles, California on July 2, 1978. He would attend Canyon Springs High School . He would be drafted in the 52nd round by the Seattle Mariners, but he would elect to attend college at Riverside Community College. Dobbs would later move on to the University of Oklahoma where he would be drafted again this time by the Houston Astros in the 10th round. Dobbs would again not sign and elect to finish up college. He would sign as a free agent with the Seattle Mariners in 2001.

Dobbs would make his Major league debut on September 8, 2004. He would establish himself as a role player for the team. In 2007, he would be selected off waivers by the Philadelphia Phillies. With Philadelphia he would become a valuable pitch hitter and role player for the club.
