The greater Swiss mountain dog is considered to be the oldest and the largest of the four Swiss mountain dog breeds.¹ They were once used to help farmers and butchers by guarding and driving livestock and pulling carts. They are considered to be easygoing, obedient, bold, faithful and love children.

Health Problems

Greater Swiss mountain dogs have been known to suffer from hip problems as well as extra eyelashes, which sometimes need to be removed surgically. They may also face digestive issues and seizures.³

Sports or Activities

As part of the working class, greater Swiss mountain dogs are very territorial and protective, making them a popular choice as guard dogs. They are not naturally aggressive, but will bark at unfamiliar people or noises.
