The first Golden Globes Awards were held in 1944 at the 20th Century Fox studios. During the early 1950s the Hollywood Foreign Press Association made the decision to establish a special award that recognizes "outstanding contributions to the entertainment industry". The award, first presented to Cecil B. DeMille in 1952, was officially named the Cecil B. DeMille Award. The following year the first recipient of the "Cecil B. DeMille Award" was Walt Disney.

Prior to 1958 the awards had typically been presented by journalists who were part of the association. In 1958 however, the first year the Golden Globes were broadcast in a local telecast, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and Sammy Davis, Jr. took over the ceremony and presented the awards. The next year the association asked them to present the awards again. Dick Clark Productions has produced the Golden Globes ceremony since 1983.

In 2008 the 65th Annual Golden Globe Awards were not telecast in a live ceremony due to the 2007 Writers Guild of America strike.
