Plot
In his dying wishes, the emperor tells his son Commodus of his plans to make General Maximus Decimus Meridius his successor to the throne. Commodus kills his father, and orders the death of General Maximus. After his escape, the general becomes enslaved, but gains fame as a gladiator in his quest to overthrow Commodus.
