The German Rex breed of domestic cat is the result of a genetic mutation similar to that of the Cornish Rex. The cat's fur is slightly curled and unusually soft, and its head is typically broad with prominent ears.¹

Lineage

The exact origin of the German Rex is unclear. Photos exist from 1930 of a cat named Munk from a village in Prussia, bearing the same characteristics as the later identified German Rex. What is known for certain is that a stray named Lämmchen—who may or may not have been descended from Munk—was spotted near Berlin in 1947, and subsequently became the matriarch of the German Rex breed. ² The German Rex remains rare, but its temperament and unique appearance have given rise to a core group of devotees.
