Genetics

Guide Note

Genetics is the science/study of heredity and genes in living organisms.

Fast Facts

  1. It's estimated there are 20,000-25,000 genes in the human genome
  2. Gregor Mendel is known as the Father of Genetics
  3. If you stretched out the DNA in just one of your cells, it would be about 2 yards long
  4. In 1953, James Watson and Francis Crick were the first to describe the double-helix structure of DNA
  5. Humans have 46 Chromosones, Fruit flies have 8, and Mice have 40

Glossary

  1. Nucleotides: Organic molecules that make up DNA, RNA as well as many other complex compounds found in cells.
  2. DNA: A chain of nucleic acid that stores encoded genetic information via strings of nucleotides (Adenine, Thymine, Guanine, Cytosine)
  3. Chromosome: A standardized structure of DNA molecules
  4. Gene: A small inheritable portion of a genomic sequence
