Early History
After attending Durmstrang School of Magic Grindelwald was expelled for almost causing the death of fellow students as he delved deeper and deeper into the Dark Arts. While attending school he developed a strong fascination of the Deathly Hallows. After his expulsion he went to live with his great-aunt Bathilda Bagshot in Godric's Hollow, close to where he knew one of the Hallows was and where he would meet Albus Dumbledore.
Grindelwald and Dumbledore
Albus's brother Aberforth was strongly opposed to the dark magic and the plans of Albus and Grindelwald to take over the world "for the greater good" of the wizarding world. A three way duel took place between Albus, Aberforth and Grindelwald resulting in the death of Ariana Dumbledore. Her death opened the eyes of Albus and concurrently caused Grindelwald to flee and delve even deeper into the Dark Arts. The cowardice of Grindelwald caused Albus to despise him.
They met again in 1945 in what was called the greatest duel of all time. Albus Dumbledore won the duel causing the stolen Deathly Hallows Elder Wand to transfer its allegiance to Dumbledore. Grindelwald was sent to the wizard prison Nurmengard where he was killed by Voldemort for protecting the location of the Elder Wand.
