GERD - Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease
Gastroesophageal reflux disease, often referred to as GERD, is a disease that causes damage to the esophagus stemming from persistent mucosal damage. Although the exact prevalence of GERD is questionable, it is considered to be one of the most common disorders of the the gastrointestinal tract.1
A noted symptom of GERD is heartburn. A person with GERD, usually experiences heartburn more then twice a week. However, GERD is treatable. GERD may be treated in a variety of ways, such as positional therapy, diet regulation, medications or surgery.2
Due to the disease's corrosive nature, GERD may cause a type of esophageal cancer known as Barrett's esophagus. Treatment is essential in order to prevent GERD from causing cancer.3
