Thorne put himself through law school calling minor league baseball and hockey games. Eventually he started regularly calling games for a team in Maine before landing a job with the New York Mets in 1985. He would then add play-by-play duties with the New Jersey Devils to his resume, and by 1988 he was the original host of the ESPN program The Sports Reporters. In 1992, Thorne was hired full-time by ESPN to call National Hockey League games, and has called college basketball and the Olympics as well. He called 12 Stanley Cup Finals, including three decided by overtime Cup clinching goals.
