What is a Gadget?

The term "gadget" can refer to any small technological or mechanical device. Though the exact origin of the word is the subject of some debate, it first came into use in the 19th Century as a catch-all phrase, one that could refer to any such object, particularly when the speaker could not recall the specific name. According to author Michael Quinion, the word may have originated with author and poet Rudyard Kipling.
