While Gonzalez expressed excitement over managing the big league club in his home town, he remains aware of related pressures. Gonzalez was raised in Miami and graduated from Southridge High School in 1982. He became the first manager in the history of the Florida Marlins when he was hired in 1992 to manage the organization's minor league affiliate in Erie, Pennsylvania.⁴
