Team History
In 1997, Florida Atlantic formed a committee to plan and facilitate adding a football team to the school. Howard Schnellenberger was hired to coach the team and direct football operations. In 1999, construction began on their home stadium and the team agreed to play at Pro Player Stadium, home of the Miami Dolphins.1
The team played their first official game in 2000, then their first Division 1-A game in 2003. After accepting the invitation to the Sun Belt Conference, the Owls played their first conference game in 2005. Florida Atlantic went on to win the Sun Belt Conference in 2007, earning an invitation to the New Orleans Bowl.1
