Final Fantasy IV - DS #1 from GamesPress
General Gameplay Tips
- Use Tents and Cottages to restore the party's health and magic power while in the World Map. They can also be used on the blue save points. Save often!
- Holding down RT allows the party to escape an instanced battle. It's not a good idea to use it all the time, but it's great for escaping an overly strong enemy. The party may lose Gil (money) by running away.
- Try to explore the entire room when searching through dungeons and caves. There are rewards for completing the maps in the game.
- Slow and Haste are extremely useful spells during boss fights. Cast Slow on bosses to reduce their attack speed and cast Haste to increase the attack speed of teammates.
- Cutscenes can be skipped by pressing start twice. Conversations can be skipped by pressing A repeatedly.
- Characters only receive experience points if they are alive during the battle. The points are split between the remaining characters after a fight.
- Un-Equip characters before circumstances force them to leave the party. You can sell their weapons and armor for Gil.
The Menu
- The menu is accessed by pressing X and can be removed by pressing B. It's broken up into several parts. Take a moment to explore the menu at the start of the game.
Inventory
- The Inventory sub-menu is the screen to check all the items collected during the game. The screen can be sorted by consumables, weapons or armor. There is also a selection for Key Items. These are items given by important characters or abilities found in the game.
- Scroll through the list with the D-Pad and select items with A. Choose the character that should receive the item in the next screen.
- It's a good idea to re-arrange the screen and put the frequently used items at the top of the list. The first eight items pop up during battle and it's vital to select them quickly.
- Use the Key Items section for teaching abilities to certain characters. Each ability can only be learned by one character. This action doesn't activate the ability though.
Magic
- This sub-menu offers a place to check and use magic spells. There are four types of magic: White, Black, Ninjutsu and Summoning. The majority of White magic spells can be performed out of battle. Use White magic to heal characters and remove status effects.
- Black magic is typically for attacking enemies. The spells are based on the elements and ramp up in damage dealt through the course of the game. Ninjutsu is a form of black magic for ninjas. The spells are based on the elements as well.
- Summoning magic is also for attacks. They bring giant creatures to the battlefield and offer major damage to enemies. They are based on many characters in the game and can be collected by fighting bosses.
- Use the menu to familiarize yourself with the spells. Look for a small readout on the screen for information on each spell. The touch screen also has info on the available magic points for each character.
Equipment
- This screen allows you to change the armor and weapons on a particular character. Click Equip at the top of the screen with A and choose an item to swap out. Click A again to access the equipment in the lower section. Clicking B exits back out to the top menu.
- Watch the touch screen to view how an item affects the stats of the character. Items typically have strengths and weaknesses. Melee characters have better offense with weapons that offer strength boosts while magic dealers should look for spirit boosts.
- There is also an Optimize function in the upper portion of the screen. Armor and weapons are automatically assigned based on the character. It's not perfect, but it comes in handy for new characters.
Abilities
- This sub-menu allows you to change the five abilities that pop up for selection during battle. Move through the list with the D-Pad and select an ability with A. A second screen pops up to change out abilities.
- Use this sub-menu to assign new abilities that have been added during the course of the game. Try to utilize the assigned slots at all times. It's also a good idea to remove abilities before a character becomes unavailable.
- There is also a section for changing the Auto-Battle command. The options available are attacking, defending, using items or using magic. Try to change a magic dealer to a heal spell during Auto-Battle. It reduces the amount of time spent healing between battles.
Status
- The Status menu is very static. You have the ability to scroll through the battle commands and abilities of each character. Shift between characters with the LT / RT and move through the list of abilities with the D-Pad.
Party
- This sub-menu offers a way to change the position of the characters on the battlefield. There are five slots and characters can be shifted to any spot.
- There's also an option to invert the character formation. You can shift between a 2 Front / 3 Rear formation or a 3 Front / 2 Rear formation. The key to successful combat is keeping the melee characters on the front lines and the magic dealers in the back.
Settings
- Battle Mode defines the flow of the game. Use Active for a realistic flow to battles. There are no pauses in Active. Use Wait to automatically pause the battle when selecting spells or items.
- Battle Speed defines the quickness of the instanced fights. Choose a smaller number to increase the speed. A larger number is preferable for boss fights.
- There is an option to change the movement speed. Run is recommended at all times. You can also turn subtitles and voices off in this sub-menu.
Saving
- The quick-save function is designed for saving your progress up to a certain point in a dungeon or cave. It saves the game and the screen shifts to a power down mode. Remember to select Continue Game at the opening menu after restarting the DS.
- The regular save function is only available in the World Map or designated safe areas. Safe areas are marked by a glowing blue symbol on the ground. They are also already marked on maps when entering a new room. You can used the three save slots to save your progress or exit to the title menu.
Castle Baron
- CUTSCENE: The game opens to a shot of Cecil, the Lord Captain for the Red Wings of Baron Castle. Cecil and his crew have just plundered the royalty of Mysidia for the Water Crystal. The crew is voicing their displeasure about the orders of the Baron when two creatures attack the flying vessel.
- Press A twice to launch into an attack on one of the flying eyeballs. Watch the power meter on the right side of the touch screen to gauge the next available attack time. This opening battle is extremely easy and meant to teach newcomers the battle process.
- CUTSCENE: The crew is seen sprawled out on the deck of the ship. After recovering, the ship flies into Baron Castle.
- Baigan, the Captain of the Guard, comes out to greet Cecil and inquires about Mysidia's Crystal. Press A to advance through the conversation. The two move into the main castle to speak to the King. Baigan heads into the throne room first to criticize Cecil's attitude.
- The King takes the Water Crystal from Cecil. Cecil complains to the King about attacking Mysidia and the King punishes Cecil by revoking Cecil's title as the leader of the Red Wings.
- The King sends Cecil into the Valley of the Mist to hunt a phantom creature (Eidolon). Cecil is to kill the creature and deliver the Carnelian Signet to the village just beyond the creature. Kain, commander of the Dragoons, enters to defend Cecil and the King orders him to go with Cecil.
- Take a moment to get acclimated to the movement controls on the DS. The D-Pad allows Cecil to walk in eight directions. Using the stylus on the touch screen map sends Cecil into a run.
- Move Cecil south to the first floor of Baron Castle. Look for the three chests on the mini-map and move to the right side of the room. Click A at the light fixture to the left of the wall in front of the chests. Pass through to collect 480 Gil, an Ether potion and a Tent.
- Take the stairs on the far left of the room and follow the hallway. Cecil eventually runs into Rosa, the white mage of Baron. After a short conversation, walk to the south outside and head to the left into the castle dungeon if you want to speak to captured Mysidia mages.
- Go back outside and head north on the castle grounds to run into Cid the Airship Fleetmaster. Cid informs Cecil that he's been ordered to build a faster airship for the king.
- Pass through the closed wooden door to the north. Once inside the West Tower, speak to Namingway the naming rabbit. Don't bother renaming the main character. The game won't allow it.
- Move up the stairs next to the rabbit and speak to the chambermaid. Walk up a second set of stairs and click A at the bed.
- CUTSCENE: Cecil is sitting on the bed pondering the King's odd change in character. Rosa approaches and inquires about Mysidia. Cecil tells her about stealing the crystal and his regret for following the orders. Rosa tells him to be careful with the Eidolon. The scene shifts to the morning. Kain and Cecil set out on their quest to kill the Eidolon.
Baron Village
- Before embarking to Mist Valley, take a moment to explore the Baron Village just south of the castle. Move Cecil on the world map into the lower entrance of the village.
- Speak to the first person in the village to find the location of the Valley is northeast on the world map. Move into the inn on the right and walk up the stairs.
- Look for another secret wall and a button to press just to the left of the door. Move inside the secret room to collect Gnomish Bread, another Tent and some Eye Drops.
- Walk back outside and move north to find two small houses. Head into the house on the left to get combat tips from the men in the basement area. Move back outside and walk north over the bridge.
- Head up the stairs and hop into the water. Follow the stream to the southeast pond. Tap A while walking around the pond to find another Tent and a Bronze Hourglass.
- Backtrack to the entrance to the water and move to the northeast corner of the village. Move north slightly and follow the outskirts of town to a clearing in the northwest corner. Tap A to search for a Gold Needle and a Phoenix Down.
- Leave the village and travel northwest along the path. Hit X during the first instanced battle to turn on the Auto-Battle function. The opening fights from the village to Mist Cave are extremely simple.
- Move through the woods and over a bridge. Look for a path moving northeast between rocks and trees on the opposite side of the river. The Mist Cave is directly north in that clearing.
Mist Cave
- Namingway the rabbit has changed his name to Mappingway the cartographer. Mappingway gives Cecil the Wayfarer's Map. The map draws itself when passing through caves and dungeons. It also rewards the player for completing a map.
- Follow the path to the right and move up the stairs. Take a left and move to the end of the path before heading up more stairs. Pick up a Potion from the chest in the top left corner.
- Feel free to continue using Auto-Battle in the cave. There are several instanced battles during the entire cave. Be sure to keep an eye on the health of Cecil and Kain.
- Continue along the path to find another two Potions and Tents in the next three chests. Make sure the two heroes have used a health potion before continuing north.
BOSS: Mist Dragon
- NOTE: We have videos for approximately 50% of the boss fights, and are busy filming the rest. Expect complete coverage shortly.
- YouTube: Final Fantasy IV DS - Mist Dragon Boss Fight (Time: 3:19)
- The duo enters into a battle with the Eidolon dragon. Make sure Auto-Battle is off and manually attack the dragon with both Cecil and Kain. Alternate using health packs when one hero is low on health.
- TIP: Do not attack the Eidolon when it shifts to Mist mode. Attacking triggers an extremely painful defense mechanism.
- Move north to complete the map after the battle. The reward is five Potions. Exit the cave to the north.
- CUTSCENE: The Carnelian Signet ring explodes and torches the village as Cecil enters the town. A small girl is seen crying over her dead mother. The mother's life was tied to the dragon. Cecil decides to end his allegiance to the King and tries to take the girl away. The girl freaks out and summons a giant rock creature that creates a large chasm beside the destroyed town.
Damcyan Desert
- Cecil wakes up beside the little girl, but Kain is nowhere to be found. When the screen shifts into the World map mode, immediately go into the inventory menu (X) and use potions to regain health from the dragon boss battle. Save the game as well.
- From the starting point, move east along Damcyan Desert. You are searching for the town of Kaipo to drop off the girl. It's near a small oasis in the desert. Use tents and potions if you happen to get low on health during the search.
- As soon as Cecil enters Kaipo, the girl is taken to the local inn automatically. Cecil tries to learn the girl's name but she isn't talking. Suddenly the King's general walks inside the Inn and demands the girl.
- The ensuing fight is ridiculously simple. The soldiers barely scratch Cecil with 10 points of damage at a time. Kill the soldiers and the general retreats. After the fight, the girl tells Cecil her name (Rydia). Rydia is a summoner. She can summon creatures to her aid.
- Load up on supplies inside the Inn and walk out into the town. Go to the west side of town and speak to the giant yellow duck. Mappington appears and offers a lesson on controlling Rydia's summoned creature.
- The creature can be improved by speaking to the duck, Fat Chocobo. The only available mini-game is a simple numbers game of math. Just add the four numbers to reach ten each time. At 1000 points in the mini-game, the creature's stats rise and a potion is awarded.
- Hop into the armory and pick up a leather cap for the girl. Move back outside and head northeast. Look for a small hut with a purple sash over the door. Speak to Mappingway (who changes his name to Livingway the vagrant) and chat about the Bestiary.
- Move into the rear of the room to find Rosa on the bed. The old woman mentions that she needs a sand pearl to cure Rosa. The sand pearl is located in a cave to the northeast of the town.
- Leave the town and save the game before moving northeast. You may want to wander the area in front of the cave to build up Rydia's level a bit before entering. Move into the cave after using a tent.
- NOTE: If you encounter the infamous Sand Worm, you will need to employ a specific strategy to defeat it: use Rydia to cast Hold and the melee characters can slice up the worm. The worm is also susceptible to cold spells.
Waterway
- Move to the north to pick up a Potion and Maiden's Kiss from the two chests. Move to the west to pick up a Tent from another chest.
- TIP: Avoid using the Auto-Battle function in the fights along the path. Stick with melee attacks from Cecil and magic attacks from Rydia.
- Move to the north and cross a bridge. Speak to a man (Tellah) whose daughter was kidnapped by a bard. Tellah needs your help getting past a large monster in the lake. He joins the party.
- If you want five Eye drops and several more fights, search the remainder of the cavern. There is a chest with Ether in the top right corner. Otherwise continue into the blue glowing passage to the north.
- Make your way around the second cavern and look for a potion on the north end. There is also a chest with Ether in the middle of the cavern. To exit this cavern, move into the water and walk to the south. The exit is on the west side of the cave.
- The trio finally reach a save point. Tellah offers a Tent to revive the party back to full health. He also explains how the blue circles in the caves can be used for tents in the future.
- Tellah and Cecil have a conversation about Anna while Rydia is sound asleep. They also speak of the creature with eight tentacles in the lake ahead. Save the game after the conversation.
- Move through the passage and look for two chests on the lower path of the cavern. You will find a Bomb Fragment and 580 Gil. Complete this section of cave to receive an additional three Tents.
- TIP: If running low on Potions, remember to use Tellah's white magic to heal the group.
- Move to the blue exit at the northwest corner and run through the next cavern. There's only a Potion in a chest near the exit. Grab it before moving into the Waterway Entrance.
- Grab the Potion to the left and Zeus's Wrath on the landing to the northwest. Move up the path to the northeast, but don't enter the next cave yet. Move southwest to pick up a new sword for Cecil. The Shadowblade has double the attack power of the first sword.
- TIP: Don't bother searching the entire cave. A completed map only awards a single Ether potion.
- Leave through the exit to the north and use a tent to revive the party completely. Be sure to save the game as well. Move to the north and enter the Underground Falls. Walk to the south and leap down the waterfall.
- Move north up the staircase from the water. Circle around the room clockwise and pick up the first two pieces of Cecil's Hades armor in the two chests on the southern portion of the map.
- Move through the exit at the northwest corner of the map. Walk to the southeast in the next cavern to pick up the final piece of the Hades Armor. Grab Hermes Sandals from the chest to the south as well.
- Move around the stone walkway and down the steps into the water. Be sure to revive any dead party members and max out the health before entering the boss fight.
BOSS: Octomammoth
- YouTube: Final Fantasy IV DS - Octomammoth Boss Fight (Time: 3:52)
- Octomammoth isn't a tough boss to kill, but the fight does take a few minutes. Use Tellah's fire attack and Cecil's melee attack with Shadowblade to take down a tentacle each round. Use Rydia for healing capabilities.
- TIP: When Tellah mentions that Octomammoth has become more dangerous, move Tellah into the healer role. Keep Cecil healthy to hack away at Octomammoth.
Waterway Contd.
- Leave through the waterfall after the fight. Save and use a tent outside. Move to the north to view the King's airships bombing Damcyan.
- Walk north and enter the castle. Grab the Tent in the chest in the third room and continue north. Look for Anna in a yellow dress lying on the floor in the fourth room. Click A to get a reaction from Tellah. Tellah goes into a blind rage and attacks the Bard. Anna starts to come around the stops the fight.
- CUTSCENE: The prince of Damcyan disguised himself as the bard to run away with Anna. The group learns that the King's Red Wings bombed the castle and stole the Crystal of Fire. Anna tells Prince Edward (the Bard) that she loves him before she passes away. Tellah storms out of the castle in search of the Red Wings. Cecil asks Edward for help finding the sand pearl in the cave of the Antlion. Edward offers his assistance and they all load into a hovercraft.
Antlion's Den
- Move east from the castle over the rocky lake. If you travel to a series of mountains, you have gone too far northeast. Press B to exit the hovercraft.
- Move inside the Antlion's Den. Pick up Spider's Silk, a Gold Needle, three Potions and a Tent in the six chests. There are two chests on the upper level and four on the lower level. The exit to the room is at the southeast corner.
- TIP: Use cold attacks from Rydia and Cecil's standard melee attack on the enemies in the den. Use Rydia's healing capabilities to patch up the group from time to time as well. Edward is extremely useless.
- Walk into B2 and proceed to the south. Look for a small cave entrance to the east. Search the room to find a chest containing the Lamia Harp. Equip the Harp on Edward.
- TIP: The enemies in this section include antlions and yellow blobs. Use Rydia's thunder attack on the blobs and Cecil's melee on the antlions.
- Move around B2 and pick up Antarctic's Wind in the chest to the south. Follow the path northwest and pop into the cave entrance to the north to complete the B1 map. That completed map awards five potions.
- TIP: If you continue through the door to the north, the room contains a blue safe point. You can save the game, pitch a tent and raid the chests inside the room.
- Move back out into B2 and explore the remainder of the room for more chests. Once the entire room has been explored, the map awards 3 Phoenix Down potions. The exit to B2 is to the south in the middle of the map.
- Move directly south in the Antlion's den to reach the Antlion's eggs (the sand pearl). After Edward grabs an egg, the giant Antlion attacks the group.
BOSS: Antlion
- YouTube: Final Fantasy IV DS - Antlion Boss Fight (Time: 4:31)
- The Antlion battle is simple with the right strategy. Attack with Cecil's melee attack when the Antlion's eyes are red and attack with Rydia's magic attacks when the creature's eyes are white.
- The Antlion is susceptible to cold attacks. Try to use the Blizzard spell as much as possible. Cast Edward's Life Anthem bardsong to raise the group's hit points throughout the entire battle.
- TIP: Remember to switch characters with the Y button when the Antlion's eyes change colors. Attacking the Antlion during the wrong eye color triggers a nasty counter-hit.
- CUTSCENE: Edward walks forward and picks up the Sand Pearl. Edward is concerned why the Antlion would attack the group. Cecil blames it on monster overpopulation. The group leaves to return to Rosa.
Return to Kaipo
- Move the group back through the cave or use the Emergency Exit potion found in the safe point room. Hop in the hovercraft (press A) and drive west to the coast. Follow the shoreline past the mountains and drive to Kaipo near the oasis.
- Take a moment to save outside the town and walk inside. Move to Rosa's house in the northeast corner of the town. Use the Sand Pearl on Rosa to revive her. She wakes up and enters into a conversation with Cecil.
- Rosa tells Cecil that the King appointed Golbez the leader of the Red Wings. Rosa believes the Golbez is manipulating the King. Golbez is after the Wind Crystal in Fabul and the Earth Crystal of Troia to complete the set. Rosa the white mage joins the party.
- Later that night, Edward takes a walk in the dark to think about Anna. A creature named Sahagin attacks him and Anna's ghost appears during the battle. Use regular attacks to defeat the creature easily. Anna bids Edward farewell after the fight.
- Take a moment to pick up any missing armor for the three characters. Try to visit the Inn as well to pick up potions. Look for a sparkling patch of grass behind the Inn to find an Item Lore ability. It doubles the effectiveness of items.
- Equip Rosa with a bow and iron arrows before hopping in the hovercraft. Move back up the coast and to the far northeast past the mountains. Look for a mountain with a path carved into it at the dead end. Hop out of the hovercraft and proceed up Mt. Hobbs.
The Wind Crystal
- Explore the paths to the left and right if you want to complete the West Slope map for 3 Hi-Potions. Approach the block of ice and press A to trigger a conversation. Rosa convinces Rydia to use her fire power on the block of ice.
- Walk up the mountain and explore the path on the right before moving up the stairs on the left. Enter the first cave door at the northwest corner of the map. There is a safe point for saving the game or using a tent on the left side of the map.
- Raid the four chests in the area for a Potion, a Tent, a Gold Needle and 960 Gil. Save the game and leave this area via the entrance. Move to the northeast side of the map and enter the cave exit on the right side. (The 3 Hi-Potions should be awarded for searching the entire map.)
- TIP: Be careful of the floating orange bomb enemies. Use cold and melee attacks to kill them. Fire attacks only create an explosion that damages the team.
- Move right to collect the Holy Arrows in the chest. Equip the new arrows with Rosa. They have double the attack power of the previous arrows.
- CUTSCENE: Move up the mountain to view a monk of Fabul battling a group of axe-wielding soldiers and a large bomb.
- The game shifts into a battle with the soldiers and Yang (the monk). Auto-Battle works perfectly fine for this short fight. The group moves quickly to join Yang in the fight against the Mom Bomb.
BOSS: Mom Bomb
- YouTube: Final Fantasy IV DS - Mom Bomb Boss Fight (Time: 7:27)
- Attack with Yang, Cecil and Rydia. Use Rosa and Edward for health boosting. Rydia's Blizzard attack works particularly well. When Yang indicates that the Mom Bomb is about to explode, change everyone into a Defend stance.
- The Mom Bomb explodes and typically takes out a couple team members. Fight the six remaining small bombs with Yang and Cecil's melee attacks. Use anyone else still alive to keep the two men healthy.
- After the fight, Yang tells the team that he is the grandmaster of the monks of Fabul. The team joins Yang and races to Fabul to protect the wind crystal. Exit north to the east slope of Fabul.
- Follow the winding linear path down the mountain. Fight off any remaining clusters of bomb enemies using the same strategies as the previous section. Exit at the southern end of the mountain back into the World Map.
- Move east from Mt. Hobbs and cross the forest. Fabul can be found on southeast of Mt. Hobbs. It's near a large body of water.
Fabul
- Move into the first floor of Fabul Castle and take a right into the entrance of the armory. Purchase the Demon Armor items for Cecil and sell the previous armor. You should also pick up a couple claws for Yang. Fire and Ice is a good combination. go ahead and buy a Lightning Claw as well.
- Move to the opposite side of the first floor to stock up on potions or sleep at the inn. Speak to the rabbit as well. He now refers to himself as Recordingway the journalist. You have the ability to view past cutscenes with Recordingway now.
- Exit to the third floor and the crew has reached the King of Fabul. Yang makes all attempts to convince the King that Golbez is preparing to attack Fabul. The King splits up the team. Cecil, Edward and Yang are sent out to fight and the two healers stay in the infirmary.
- The first fight is against a trio of Baron soldiers. Use Yang's new claws to end the fight quickly. Use Edward for healing the group. The Red Wings attack after the fight and the group retreats to the first floor of the castle.
- The second fight is a trio of monsters. Focus on taking out the mermaid in the back first before turning your attention to the creatures on the front row. Use standard attacks for all three creatures.
- Take out the red soldier in the third fight right off the bat. This confuses the blue soldiers and allows time to recharge the attacks. The team moves into the throne room after this fight.
- Continue fighting all the creatures and the team eventually retreats to the crystal chamber. They take position in front of the Wind Crystal and Kain enters the room. Unfortunately Kain has switched sides again. Kain cannot be beaten at this point in the game. Feel free to turn on Auto-Battle during the fight.
- CUTSCENE: Kain attempts to kill Cecil, but Yang stops him. Rosa runs in and Kain becomes conflicted. Golbez enters the room and uses powerful lightning attacks to repel the team. Rosa attempts to interfere, but Golbez kidnaps her. Kain and Golbez leave with the Crystal.
- Rydia cures the team after Kain walks out of the room. Yang decides to join the team permanently as well. Once control has been regained, move south into the throne room and take a right.
- Look for three chests on the map that seem unreachable. Push the character up against the wall on the right to find the hidden passage. Open the three chests to get Spider Silk, Ether, and the Demon Shield.
- Exit the room to the south and move into the Inn. It's to the left of the stairs on the first floor. The group rests automatically and come up with a plan before bed. They need a boat to slip past the Red Wings.
- The King readies a boat for the group and awards Cecil a sword from a dark knight. The sword is called Deathbringer. The Deathbringer adds another 10 points to Cecil's attack power and increases his main stats.
- Grab the tent in the nearby chest and leave the King's quarters. Continue south until reaching the outdoors. Walk into the tower on the left side of the screen and pick up a Bomb Fragment, Antarctic Wind, and a potion from the three chests.
- Leave the castle using the main entrance and look for the boat at the northeast corner of the castle. Approach it to trigger a conversation with Yang's wife. The conversation awards the Counter Augment.
- The ship sets sail for Baron to find Cid, the airship builder. Unfortunately the ship is attacked by a monstrous creature known at the Leviathan.
- CUTSCENE: Rydia falls overboard and Yang jumps into the water to save her. Edward falls to the ship floor unconscious and Cecil goes to help him. Suddenly the Leviathan peeks his ugly head up and Cecil blacks out.
Mysidia
- Cecil wakes up alone on a deserted beach. Move to the east in the world map screen. The town of Mysidia is nearby. Move inside the town and try to avoid the townsfolk. The men in robes will turn Cecil in a frog during any conversation.
- Walk to the north end of town and enter the large building. Approach the Elder standing directly in front of the door. He angrily asks why Cecil has returned. Cecil attempts to apologize and the Elder offers him a path to redemption.
- The Elder wants Cecil to climb Mount Ordeals and cleanse himself of the dark taint on his soul. The Elder also assigns Cecil two mages for assistance, Porom and Palom.
- Porom used white magic exclusively and Palom only used black magic. Porom has a great defensive spell called Cry. Use it to reduce enemy defense by half. Use Porom's healing staff to heal teammates in battle as well.
- When leveling Porom and Palom in the journey to the mountain, keep an eye on their new powers. They typically gain a new magical power at each level.
- TIP: If you haven't assigned it yet, go into the menu and assign the counterattack ability to Cecil.
- Move out of the town and head to the southeast. Look for a winding road that is surrounded by water. Follow the linear path until reaching a large forest. Continue walking east to a clearing in the center of the forest.
- Look for Mt. Ordeals in the center of the clearing. Save the game and enter the mountain pass.
Mount Ordeals
- Walk west along the path and approach the fire. Palom puts out the fire with a blizzard spell.
- CUTSCENE: While Cecil is dealing with the magical twins, Golbez is summoning a ghost-like creature named Scarmiglione. Golbez assigns Scarmiglione the task of killing Cecil. Golbez believes that Cecil's dark blade is no match for the undead. Scarmiglione heads to Mt. Ordeals and Golbez taunts Kain.
- Walk to the east and grab a potion from the chest at the far end. There's also a potion in a chest up the stairs to the north. Continue up the path and explore the entire mountain entrance.
- TIP: If attacked by the flaming heads, do not use any of Porem's group fire spells. Those spells heal the flaming heads. Use Blizzard spells instead.
- The exit to Mt. Ordeals Trail is at the northeast corner of the map. The team receives five antidotes for completing the entrance map.
- Move south slightly to open up the map and turn around to follow the path north up the mountain trail. The path wraps to the east and north again up some stairs. The gang runs into Tellah at the top of those stairs.
- TIP: Use group fire spells on the undead zombies that appear in the instanced fights. Make sure all flaming skulls are dealt with first.
- Tellah is on the mountain in search of a magical power referred to as Meteor. Cecil fills him in on the recent events and Tellah joins the party. Complete the map for three Hi-Potions and use the north exit to Mt. Ordeals Crossing.
- Travel to the west side of the map for an Ether potion in a chest. Move up the mountain in the middle of the map and take a right up another set of stairs. Cross the wooden bridge at the top of the map and move south to grab another Ether potion in a chest.
BOSS: Scarmiglione
- YouTube: Final Fantasy IV DS - Scarmiglione Boss Fight (Time: 8:32)
- Complete the map to gain another Ether potion and exit in the northwest corner to Mt. Ordeals Summit. The group hears a strange noise upon entering. Ignore it for now and move to the east side of the map for a safe point. Use it to save the game and recharge the group.
- Walk up the second set of stairs and take a left to the wooden bridge. Scarmiglione attacks the group, but he's a pushover at this point. Use the Cura spell and the Fira spell on the entire undead group.
- Return to the safe point and save again. The next fight is insanely difficult without the right strategy. Return to the middle of the bridge and enter the menu by pressing X. Select Party and switch the formation around. Cecil should be standing in the back and the three magical folks are up front.
- Pass over the bridge and a much larger version of Scarmiglione appears behind the team. If you switched the formation, Cecil is on the front row during the fight.
- Cecil is simply a meat shield in this fight. His melee attacks do little damage to Scarmiglione. Use Cecil as a support character for heals. It is safe to occasionally throw a Hi-Potion at Scarmiglione with Cecil.
- Use Tellah and Porom to cast Cura on Scarmiglione. It does about 700 points of damage each time. Use Palom to heal the group and throw Hi-Potions at Scarmiglione. The main focus of the fight is to keep the members casting Cura alive.
- TIP: DO NOT use fire magic, the fire staff or bombs on Scarmiglione. He's incredibly vulnerable to fire attacks, but his counter-attack to fire is extremely deadly.
- The group collects a ton of experience after Scarmiglione falls off the cliff. Change the formation back to normal and heal up any damaged group members. Move to the west and walk up the platform to interact with the white pedestal.
- Cecil is launched into a new room and transformed into a White Knight. challenged to a fight by his previously Dark self. Instead of fighting the Dark Knight, use Defend to protect the new Cecil during the battle. It ends with one defended hit.
- CUTSCENE: Cecil is offered the power of the Paladin and told by the mysterious voice to stop Golbez. Cecil feels different and it affects the people around him. Tellah remembers all of his forgotten spells and the power of Meteor.
Back to Mysidia
- Enter the menu after control is regained. Toss some armor on Cecil and check out the new sword. It's more powerful than the previous sword. Cecil has also been reduced to level 1. Feel free to walk down the mountain and level up.
- Complete the map to be awarded the Red Fang and cross the bridge to save again. Move back into Mt. Ordeals Crossing and continue down the mountain. Look for the Curse Augment sparkling on the east side. It's at the bottom of the stairs on the second level.
- Move through the next two sections of the mountain fighting groups of enemies. Cecil should be up to level 12 to 15 by the time the party reaches the World Map again. Save the game and move back to Mysidia (northwest).
- Move to the armor shop on the left side of Mysidia and purchase new armor for Cecil. Pick up the Lustrous Shield, Lustrous Helm, Knight's Armor and Gauntlets. Feel free to sell any remaining dark armor.
- Go speak to the village Elder in the main building. The Elder is impressed with Cecil's paladin status. The Elder tells Cecil of the Mysidian tale about the sword that he now carries. The Elder also reopens the Devil's Road to Baron. Porom and Palom decide to stick with Cecil.
- Move out of the main building and walk to the east to find the Devil's Road building. Walk into the blue glowing light and the party is transported to Baron.
Baron Revisited
- Walk out of the Devil's Road building and speak to the first civilian outside. She speaks of a Monk in league with Golbez. Move into the Inn to find Yang upstairs in the pub.
- Speak to Yang and the two soldiers attack. Use the Break spell on each soldier to end the fight immediately. When Yang attacks, use fire spells and melee attacks to wake him up from Golbez's spell.
- Yang awakes and tells Cecil that Rydia was swallowed by Leviathan. He's unsure about Prince Edward. Yang joins the party again and the innkeeper offers a free night's stay. Yang gives Cecil a master key to the castle.
- Be sure to assign Yang some armor when control is regained. You may need to purchase new equipment at the armory. Use the Baron Key on the door to the armory.
- TIP: Look for an unmarked passage by the brown crate in the right hand corner of the armory. Follow it to reach the opposite side. Pick up 2000 Gil and Zeus's Anger in the chests.
- Load up on supplies and look for a locked door on the west side of town. It's next to a stack of crates. Use the Baron Key on the door. Enter and grab the 1000 Gil from the chest on the far right side of the little room. Walk down the stairs to enter the Ancient Waterway passage to the castle.
Ancient Waterway
- Move south through the B1 passage and look for three chests at the bottom of the map. They contain a Hi-Potion, Ether potion, and Zeus's Anger. Move north up the passage and follow the winding path to the northwest exit to B3. Finish mapping the B1 floor to gain three Hi-Potions.
- TIP: Use fire attacks on the floating fish for quick kills. The alligators are susceptible to ice attacks.
- Walk along the opening passage in B3 and it dead ends to the south. Backtrack a bit and look for an unmarked passage to the east. Follow it through a room with a waterfall and into a section that leads south.
- Look for a chest to the south with Hermes Sandals. Follow the shallow water to the south and look for an unmarked passage that leads east. Move along the waterway to reach an exit to B2 in the northeast corner.
- TIP: Searching the remainder of the room awards a Bronze Hourglass, Spider's Silk and an Ether potion. It's a waste of time considering the amount of instanced fights that spring up.
- B2 is a small map, but there are new enemies here. Use thunder spells on the two-headed snakes and the giant red worm monster. Move north to the exit and look for an unmarked passage to the left to find an Ether potion in a chest.
- Move to the exit for the map completion award of three Remedies. In the next passage, walk to the west exit and use the safe point. Grab the Ancient Sword in a chest on the east side of the room.
- Leave this room and use the lighted exit on the opposite side. Try to heal everyone before entering the castle.
Storm the Castle
- Swim along the castle moat and move to the south. Look for an entrance to the castle on the southwest corner. Feel free to use the bed in the northwest tower to heal. Enter the castle through the door to the right of the southwest tower.
- Follow the passage back to the first floor of the castle. Baigan meets the party members and joins up to help defeat Golbez. The magic twins see through Baigan's trickery and he reveals himself to be a nasty monster with snake hands.
BOSS: Baigan
- YouTube: Final Fantasy IV DS - Baigan Boss Fight (Time: 3:08)
- The key to defeating Baigan is boosting team abilities. Start the fight by assaulting Baigan with Tellah's most powerful blizzard spell. Baigan casts a spell to reflect all magic at this point. Cast Cry with Porom to reduce his defense.
- Use the melee abilities of Yang and Cecil to bash away at Baigan's body. Try to have Tellah cast Haste on the two melee attackers to raise their recharge time. Yang's Focus ability also works wonders for building up a strong attack.
- TIP: Another good strategy is casting Reflect on a teammate and bouncing blizzard spells off them. The spell travels to Baigan and ignores his reflect spell. Twincast also ignores the reflect barrier.
- Continue healing the group with Porom and slashing away at Baigan. Try using the Protect spell to avoid taking damage from Baigan's attacks.
- Eventually Baigan's body is destroyed, but the arms remain. Both arms explode and kill two teammates. As long as there are three people still alive after Baigan's body disappears, you can return to the bed in the northwest tower to regenerate.
- Travel back into the ancient waterway to save the game after using the bed. The upcoming boss fight is extremely difficult and there's no reason to fight Baigan again.
BOSS: Cagnazzo
- YouTube: Final Fantasy IV DS - Cagnazzo Boss Fight (Time: 9:15)
- Move back into the castle and walk north up to the throne room. The King of Baron is sitting on the throne. Unfortunately it's another trick. The king is actually the Drowned King, Cagnazzo.
- TIP: Carnazzo has a brutal water attack that has the ability to kill the team instantly. He does show when he's charging up the attack. Look for water collecting around his position and hit Cagnazzo with a Thunder spell to halt his water attack.
- Cast Haste on Palom and Tellah immediately. Use both of these characters to hit Cagnazzo with Thunder spells when he prepares the water attack.
- Cagnazzo is vulnerable to ice spells. Try to sneak in a Blizzard spell with Tellah and Palom right after a thunder strike has dissipated the water.
- Use Cecil as a support character. Assign him to protect Tellah or Palom during the battle. He also needs to revive characters when Cagnazzo uses a silence spell.
- Use Yang's Focus ability to charge up a few times before attacking. If you still have the lightning and ice claws, they make for a devastating combination.
- Porom needs to use Cry to lower Cagnazzo's defense and stick with Cura to continually heal the party. She can also be used to revive teammates under status effect.
- When Cagnazzo retreats to the blue shell, use Blizzard attacks and repeated Yang attacks. Be careful for the water attack as he emerges from the shell. Watch the indicator on the screen for timing help.
- CUTSCENE: Cid bursts into the throne room after Cagnazzo is dead to scream at the defunct King. Cecil informs him of the current events and Rosa's status. Cid wants to help and offers his airship. As the group makes their way to the airship, Cagnazzo's ghost starts closing the walls of a hallway on the group. Palom and Porom perform a magical spell to turn themselves into stone and stop the wall. The team laments their sacrifice and moves to the airship.
- CUTSCENE: Golbez is seen worried about Cecil's victories. Kain comes up with a plan to coerce Cecil into gathering the last crystal. He's going to offer Rosa's life for the crystal.
- CUTSCENE: Cid opens a secret passage that leads to his airship, the Enterprise. They board the ship and begin flying over the castle. The team spots a white flag of truce from a nearby airship. Kain delivers the terms of the trade and the team has no choice but to accept the terms. The team leaves to find the Earth Crystal in Troia.
The Earth Crystal
- Take a moment to fly over the entire map and uncover all the hidden sections. You also may want to set the ship down near Baron Castle to save the game.
- Feel free to search the castle or any other town for that matter. There are two Ether potions, two Unicorn Horns, and two Phoenix Downs in the east side of Baron Castle. There are also Ether potions, Hi-Potions, Tents, Bacchus's Wine and Hermes Sandals in the East Tower.
- Visit the basement of the East tower to speak to the ghost of the King. He wants you to return after visiting the place where the Eidolons dwell.
- If you would like to collect Cagnazzo's Tsunami ability, move back down into the ancient waterway and search the floors for a sparkling item.
- Take the airship down to the southwest portion of the map. Look for Eblan castle to the southwest of the black tower. Move inside the castle and collect a Hi-Potion at the room with the chest to the east. (There is an unmarked passage along the east wall.)
- Move north and pass the room with five chests. In the throne room, press A behind the throne to collect the Ninja Sutra. It's a book of Eblanese arcana. Move along the west wall to find a hidden passage leading to an Alarm Clock and Unicorn Horn.
- Repeat the search on the west side of the throne room. There is a Gold Needle, Cottage and Maiden's Kiss in three chests.
- TIP: Don't bother searching the towers in the rest of the castle. The enemies are far too difficult at this point in the game.
- Hop back in the airship and move to the eastern side of the world map. Look for a trail of islands between Fabul and Mt. Ordeals. There is a small town called Mythril on one of the islands.
- Pick up a mythril hammer and shield for Sid while in town. If you need cash, look for 5000 Gil inside the large bush just outside the Weapon shop. (Keep pressing A until it pops up). You could also sell the ancient sword for 9500 Gil.
- Don't bother with the Mythril armor for now. Hop back in the airship and head to Troia. It's the large land mass northwest of Castle Baron. It's tucked away in a group of trees.
Troia
- Move into the castle from the World Map and travel north into the castle gates. Take a left inside the first room and exit out to the castle walls. Look for a door to the south that leads to the Troia Infirmary. Move inside to see Prince Edward.
- CUTSCENE: Edward is reunited with the group and Yang informs him of Rydia's demise. Cecil tells him about Rosa and the required Earth crystal. Edward informs the group that the Earth crystal has been stolen by a Dark Elf. Edward gives Cecil Whisperweed and the group leaves.
- Search the east side of the castle for Tents, Hi-Potions, Ether potions and Ruby Rings. Return to the original castle entrance and move north. Speak to the women lining each side of the room for clues on the location of the Dark Elf. They also warn of the danger in entering the Magnetic Cavern with any metal armor or weapons.
- TIP: Before leaving for the Magnetic Cavern, you may want to visit previous towns for non-metallic armor. This is also a good time to level up the four party members in the forest just north of Troia.
- Follow the mountain range and walk north of Troia. Look for a circular section of trees near the sea. Enter it to find a Chocobo Forest. Grab a black chocobo and the team has the ability to fly around the forest. (There is no place to land the airship near the cave.)
- Travel east on the chocobo and look for a cave tucked away in a mountain range. Hop off and save the game. Equip all the non-metallic clothing and enter the cave.
- TIP: If you had trouble finding a non-metallic weapon for Cecil, try the Fireshard in Troia's village. Yang's claws are perfectly fine and Cid needs to swap back out for the wooden hammer.
Lodestone Cavern
- The four men are able to enter the cave if wearing non-metallic items. Move to the east to find a chest with a Hi-Potion. Take the middle path southeast and the path wraps around to the opposite side of the screen. The exit is in the southwest corner.
- TIP: Fire attacks are useful in the cavern. Rely on Yang's melee attacks and pay attention to the health of each character after a battle.
- Pick up the Unicorn Horn in the chest near the exit. The map reward is an Ether potion. Take the exit into B2. Look for a chest containing Ether across a bridge to the west.
- Move up the main path and look for a door in the northeast corner. Look inside to grab an Ether potion and 2000 Gil in two chests. Go back out into B2 and follow the path west to find the exit. The team is awarded three Vampire Fangs for map completion.
- Look for a door to the left of the B3 entrance. There is a safe point inside to save the game and use a tent. Exit the room and travel south. Look for a third door in the southeast corner that leads to three chests. Pick up a Bronze Hourglass, Spider Silk and a Hi-Potion inside the room.
- Follow the lower path to the west. Take a right at the corner and travel to the north. The exit to B3 is in the northwest corner. The team is awarded three Silent Bells for map completion.
- Move through the small passage and pick up the Fairie Claws from the chest. Equip them on Yang for slightly increased stamina. Exit through the door on the left side of the room.
- Move west in B4 and follow the wooden bridge north. Before moving past the lit torches, take a right at the second wooden bridge and look for a door that leads to another safe point. Use a tent and save the game before exiting.
- Run back to the section with torches and look for a path to the left for a chest with an Emergency Exit. Grab it and complete the map for a Dry Ether (Restores 100 MP).
BOSS: Dark Elf
- YouTube: Final Fantasy IV DS - Dark Elf (Time: 5:55)
- Exit B4 to the north and the team enters a crystal room. Walk up to the Dark Elf in the center of the room and press A to start a fight. Turn on Auto-Battle and wait for the Elf to completely destroy the team with a massive fire spell.
- CUTSCENE: The team falls and the scene shifts to Edward in the Infirmary. He limps over to the harp and uses it to activate the Whisperweed that he gave to Cecil. The team is revived and the metallic restriction has been lifted.
- Enter the menu and equip all metal items for every character. The team's health and mp have already been refilled thanks to Edward's music. Start the fight by approaching the Dark Elf and pressing A again.
- The Dark Elf only uses magical attacks for some reason. Use Tellah to cast a Silence spell on the Dark Elf and he's fairly docile for the first half of the fight. He occasional casts a shape-shifting potion on a team member, but that's easily fixed with a remedy potion.
- Allow Cid and Yang to hack away at the Elf. Use Cecil to heal the entire team and cover Tellah. It's also a good idea to use Yang's Focus to charge up an attack for use in the second half of the fight.
- Use Tellah to cast Haste on himself and Yang. When the Dark Elf cries out in pain, he shifts into a new form, the Dark Dragon. Use Tellah's most powerful fire spell and Yang's focused attack to knock out 75% of the Dragon's health.
- Allow Cid, Yang and Cecil to hack away at the Dragon until death. Use Tellah for health boosts if needed.
- Pick up the earth crystal by pressing A and walk out of the blue room. Use the Teleport spell or an Emergency Exit to leave the cavern. Hop on the chocobo and use it to return to chocobo forest.
Troia Castle
- Move back to Troia Castle and go speak to Edward. Tellah finally forgives Edward for taking Anna away. Edward gives Cecil the Bardsong augment. Backtrack and enter the northern room with the two rows of women.
- CUTSCENE: The women are surprised to see the earth crystal. Suddenly Kain's voice floods the room. Kain orders Cecil to exit the castle and board the airship.
- Leave this room, but explore the east tower before leaving. Walk down the set of stairs to the left and speak to the guard in the jail cell. Tell the guard that the women upstairs gave you permission to enter the vault.
- Follow the unmarked hallway to the opposite side and walk down the stairs. Raid the 18 chests in the long room. The chests contain 2 Hi-Potions, 2 Remedies, 2 Ether potions, 2 Dry Ether potions, an Elixir, a Silver Apple, 2 Echo Herbs, a Great Bow, Ice Arrows, Fire Arrows, Lightning Arrows and 55,000 Gil.
- Exit the Castle and board the airship.
- CUTSCENE: Kain is waiting in the sky on the second airship. He requests the Earth Crystal and informs the party that Rosa is at the Tower of Zot. The two ships leave together and move to the tower. As the team enters the tower, Golbez informs them that Rosa is on the top floor.
Tower of Zot
- TIP: You have the option of leaving the tower at the starting point and returning at a later time. The majority of the enemies in the tower are vulnerable to fire. If you need fire weapons, leave the tower and revisit the town.
- Move to the northwest corner of the first room and pick up the Flame Mail from the chest. Equip it immediately to offer a minimal amount of protection from ice attacks. Leave out the exit in the northeast corner of the room.
- TIP: When encountering the blue dogs that use Blizzard attacks, have Tellah cast a Berserk spell on one dog and use fire weapons to kill the second dog.
- On the second floor, follow the path west and take the first left. Go to the southern end and continue west. Look for another chest and open it to grab the flame sword.
- After acquiring the flame sword, the group is attacked by a red dog that uses fire based attacks. Have Tellah cast Berserk on the dog and use melee attacks to kill it.
- If you want three Heavenly Wrath potions (casts Thundara), finish the map of the second floor. Otherwise look for the exit on the west side of the room.
- Loop around the third floor. Just follow the southern path around the perimeter of the room. To fight off the giant blue turtles, use cold attacks. Fire attacks only make the turtles stronger. There are no chests to grab on the third floor.
- On the fourth floor, move south and follow the passage to a hallway in the middle of room. Move up the hallway and take a right. Use the door to reach the fifth floor and pick up the Sage's Surplice armor in the chest at the dead end. This is a decent upgrade for Tellah.
- Backtrack to the fourth floor and proceed down the west side. Take another door to the fifth floor. Pick up the Gaia Hammer in the chest at the dead end. This is an excellent upgrade for Cid's hammer. It increases his attack power and strength.
- Backtrack to the fourth floor again and walk up the northern hallway. Pick up the Hell Claws for Yang in the first chest and the Flame Shield for Cecil at the end of the hallway.
- Move back to the fourth floor for the final time and follow the southeast hallway to another fifth floor entrance. Move south along the fifth floor hall and take a right at the corner.
- Walk into the first door that comes into view. Use the safe point inside to pitch a tent and save the game. Exit the room and move west along the hallway. The team is greeted by three women at the door. Sandy, Cindy and Mindy demand the Earth Crystal and a fight commences.
BOSS: Magus Sisters
- YouTube: Final Fantasy IV DS - Magus Sisters Boss Fight (Time: 5:37)
- TIP: Sandy is tall and on the left. Cindy is fat and in the middle. Mindy is the tiny girl on the right. The girls use a "Delta Force" attack sequence. Sandy casts Reflect on Cindy and Mindy casts attack spells to bounce off Cindy.
- Use Tellah to Silence Sandy and Dispel Cindy. Attack Cindy first because she has the ability to raise her fallen teammates. Use Cecil and Tellah to heal the group while Yang and Cid use melee attacks on Cindy.
- The remaining two witches are simple to beat after Cindy falls. Attack with all four members of the party and target Mindy first. You may even be able to turn on Auto-Battle at this point.
- Move back to the safe area and save the game. Continue through the door previously blocked by the witches. Circle around the hall and approach the door at the northern point on the map.
- CUTSCENE: Golbez and Kain are waiting at the doorway. Cecil demands to see Rosa and Golbez wants the Crystal. Cecil hands over the Earth Crystal and Golbez walks away without offering Rosa. An enraged Tellah approaches Golbez and starts a battle. Tellah uses fire, thunder and cold spells to no avail. He decides to use Meteor and does 9999 damage on Golbez. Tellah falls to the ground, but the Meteor spell also weakened Golbez's hold on Kain.
- CUTSCENE: Golbez strangely recognizes Cecil and walks away from the fight. Tellah regrets using the Meteor spell and wants the group to avenge Anna's death. Cecil approaches a fallen Kain and wakes him up. Kain remembers where Rosa is at and they both race through the tower. Cecil saves Rosa right before a guillotine was to kill her.
- Arm Rosa with the Great Bow and some arrows of your choosing. Move south to enter another boss fight with a wind elemental named Barbariccia.
BOSS: Barbariccia
- YouTube: Final Fantasy IV DS - Barbariccia Boss Fight (Time: 10:27)
- Barbariccia has a horrific wind attack that rips through the entire group. The key to halting the attack is Kain's Jump attack. Use Kain's attack when Barbariccia moves into her tornado stance. It's also a good idea to avoid attacks during her tornado stance.
- Use Cecil to cover Kain and cast group Cura heals. Watch out for Barbariccia's counter attacks. She occasionally goes into a counter attack after a melee hit. Use Tellah to heal the party if Cecil needs help.
- Use Yang's Focus ability to charge up strong attacks and Cid can wail away while his hammer as well. Don't be discouraged if everyone but Cecil and Kain die. The fight can be finished with only those two party members.
- CUTSCENE: The tower starts to collapse after the fight. Rosa uses a mass teleport power to move the entire party to Castle Baron. Kain starts telling Cecil of four more Dark Crystals that Golbez is seeking. Kain gives Cecil the Magma Stone and tells him that the Dark Crystals are in the underworld. The stone is the key to unlocking the underworld.
The Underworld
- There is a town called Agart directly south of Baron Castle. Hop in the airship and fly to the small island at the bottom of the World Map. Land on the island and enter the village.
- TIP: There is a telescope in the house to the left. Check it out to get a view of the twin moons.
- Explore the little town and stock up on supplies. There isn't much to do here besides speak to another form of the rabbit and pick up some Holy Arrows for Rosa.
- Go to the center of town and look for a well. Press A and select the Magma Stone. The stone glows warmer and Cid accidentally drops it in the well. An enormous volcano spews magma in the air and opens the path to the Underworld.
- Exit the town and save the game. Hop in the airship and land inside the newly formed black pit. The airship flies through the volcano and spots the Red Wings. The Red Wings are in a battle with some blue tanks on the ground.
- The Enterprise attempts to fly through the battle and gets shot down. The team exits the ship to explore the area. There is a castle to the southwest.
- TIP: Re-equip Cecil with the Mythgraven Blade. The Flame Sword is useless in the fiery volcano. Cid should also be stripped of any useful items as he's about to leave the party.
- Move to the Dwarfen Castle to the southwest and save the game. Travel north into the throne room. The King is surprised to see the group still alive after the crash.
- Giott, the king of the dwarves and ruler of the underworld, inform the party that two of the four Dark Crystals have been captured. The King asks for help with battling the airships and Cid volunteers to repair the Enterprise with Mythril plating.
- After King Giott tells the group where the nearest crystal is located, Yang suspects there is a spy in the room. The group enters the crystal to find a group of dolls mocking them.
BOSS: Evil Dolls
- YouTube: Final Fantasy IV DS - Evil Dolls Boss Fight (Time: 9:23)
- The dolls are called Calcabrina and are minions of Golbez. When the fight begins, kill the three dolls on the first row and the three in the rear combine to form a giant Calcabrina.
- The key to this battle is slowing or holding Calcabrina. Use Cecil to protect Rosa and she can cast Hold or Slow. Hold prevents Calcabrina from counter-attacking and halts all regular attacks.
- Use Jump to attack with Kain and use charged attacks with Yang. Cecil can attack when the creature is being held only. Otherwise Cecil should be on healing duty.
The Underworld Contd.
BOSS: Golbez
- YouTube: Final Fantasy IV DS - Golbez Boss Fight (Time: 9:29)
- Golbez appears after Calcabrina is destroyed. Golbez informs the group that the purpose of the crystals is to activate the Tower of Babil and open a gate to the moon. The moon is a source of limitless power.
- Start the fight with Golbez by simply using regular attacks. There's no point of using any strategy at this point. Golbez puts the entire party into a paralyzed state and summons a Dark Dragon to kill everyone.
- Rydia swoops in on a mist dragon and kills the Dark Dragon in one hit after the Dark Dragon kills everyone but Cecil. Cecil is restored and the true fight with Golbez begins. This is a good time to use a Phoenix Down potion on Rosa and heal her as well.
- Rosa should cast protection and healing spells while Cecil uses Libra to find Golbez's weakness. Rydia has to summon a creature with the elemental power that exploits that weakness.
- TIP: Finding the weakness is a bit confusing. After Cecil casts Libra, select Attack on any character and look at the bottom of the touch screen to see his weakness.
- Repeat this process four times to defeat Golbez. Use Ether potions if Golbez saps the team's magic power. He falls to the ground and the party catches up on Rydia's life.
- CUTSCENE: She was swallowed by the Leviathan and carried to the land of the Eidolons. She befriended the Eidolons and learned several new summoning powers. Rydia joins the party. As the party leaves the crystal room, Golbez rises from the dead and steals the Dark crystal. The team apologizes to the King and he tells them to protect the final crystal. It's in the Sealed Cave to the southwest. The King comes up with a plan to steal the other seven crystals from the Tower of Babil while Golbez searches for the eighth crystal.
Dwarfen Castle
- TIP: Try to explore the entire Dwarfen Castle before purchasing any new weapons or armor. There are plenty of great items to be found in chests around the castle. Look for a Dwarfen Axe and a Power Armlet in the East Tower. Look for a Black Belt Gi in the West Tower.
- Purchase a Sage's Miter and Rune Armlet for Rosa at the armor shop on the east side of the castle. You may also want to purchase another Dwarfen Axe for Kain or Cecil. Don't buy any flame related items. The majority of the creatures in the Underworld are created out of flames.
- To leave the castle, search the lower hallway that connects the two towers. There is a secret passage beside the Infirmary. Speak to the guard standing in the little room and he allows the party to pass through the hidden entrance.
- Follow the passage south to collect three Cottage potions. (These potions restore the entire group's HP and MP.) Continue down the hallway to find an exit in the southwest corner.
- TIP: Use the pot near the exit to restore the entire group's health and magic levels before leaving.
- Exit the castle and save the game. Feel free to turn on Auto-Battle for the journey. The enemies are generally weak and they don't use any magic attacks. Kain and Cecil should be hitting for 1200 to 1500 damage points with those axes.
- TIP: This is a great area to grind out some levels. The loot drops are decent as well.
- Travel west until the path breaks to the north. Pass the magma cracks in the floor and look to the north to find the tanks firing on the tower. Use a tent to max out the stats, save the game and enter the tower.
Tower of Babil
- There are thirteen floors to the Tower of Babil. Look for a Hi-Potion and an Emergency Exit potion to the west. There is an Ether potion to the east. Finish the entire map of B13 and the party gains five Antarctic Winds.
- TIP: Run away if challenged by the red flaming dogs. Their Scorch spell is devastating. (Hold down RT to run away.)
- Pick up the Green Beret in a chest near the door. Follow the path south and look for a door that leads to a room with one chest. Grab the Icebrand sword out of the chest and the party is attacked.
- The key to killing the floating eyeball is Yang's Focus. Charge up focus a few times and kill the eyeball in one hit. The eyeball won't attack the group unless attacked.
- Leave the room and look for a doorway to the northeast of B12. Go into the room and pick up the Ice Lance from the chest. Fight another eyeball and leave. Complete the map to gain three Arctic Winds and exit to B11 in the middle of the map.
- TIP: Now that nearly the entire team has an ice weapon, try fighting a fire dog when an instanced battle pops up.
- Look to the left of the door to pick up the Cat Claws in the chest. Yang is faster and more evasive with this claw. Search the remainder of the floor for a Phoenix Down potion and an Ether potion.
- Move into the door in the southwest corner to pick up a Killer Bow for Rosa and an Antarctic Wind. Return to B11 and use the door to the left to reach B10.
- Use the door to the left of the entrance to find a safe area to save the game and pitch a tent. Leave the room and follow the path to the northeast. Look for a door to the south to enter.
- Pick up the Ice Armor inside the chest and fight another eyeball. Move north in B10 to find a similar room with the Ice Shield. Fight another eyeball and leave the room.
- The B10 exit is at the northwest corner of the map. The award for map completion is five Hi-Potions. Leave at the exit and enter B9. Grab the Arctic Wind potion in the nearby chest and follow the hall south.
- Continue around the perimeter of the room to pick up a Hi-Potion in a chest on the east side. Use the door to the north to reach B8. This small room is only a path to B7.
- Travel east in B7 and enter a safe area. Save the game and exit back out of the room. Pass the B8 door and take the south path to find a chest with Dry Ether. Move to the east and enter a door to reach B6.
Dr. Lugae
- YouTube: Final Fantasy IV DS - Lugae and Barnabas Boss Fight (Time: 8:34)
- Approach the center of B6 and wait for Rubicante to appear. After a brief conversation, Dr. Lugae challenges the group to a fight. Leave the good doctor alone for the moment and attack the Frankenstein monster named Barnabas first.
- Attack Barnabas with Yang, Cecil, Kain and Rydia. Use thunder spells to weaken him and use Rosa to heal the group. The doctor occasionally heals Barnabas with oil, but it's not enough to keep him alive due to the attacks.
- After Barnabas falls, the doctor combines with his creation to make Barnabas-Z. Continue the same strategy and watch out for his melee attacks. After several hits, the doctor finds a self-destruct button inside Barnabas and kills at least one party member.
- The battle appears to be over, but Dr. Lugae is still alive. His new form is ridiculously difficult to understand. He uses a reversal gas that reverses all effects of attacks and heals.
- TIP: If you have two elixirs, this battle can be finished in less than 20 seconds. Wait until he uses the reversal gas at the start and hit him with two elixir potions. Each potion will do 9999 damage points. The reversal gas has to be in effect though.
- If you don't have elixirs, wait for the reversal gas to go in effect and hit him with healing spells. The problem with this method is that he blankets the area with another coat of reversal gas during the healing charge time. This cancels the original gas and he is healed instead of damaged.
- Stay away from melee attacks and try to keep the team healed. You could also try Rydia's summon attacks, but they take a long time to charge and reversal gas may destroy the team.
- Lugae retreats from the battlefield and the group obtain Lugae's Key. The party is now tasked with saving the dwarves in the tanks. Move back to B7 and save the game before heading back into B9.
- TIP: If you want to keep Yang's gear, take it off him before unlocking the door.
- Take the middle hallway in B9 and unlock the door with Lugae's Key. (The map should be clear now. +5 Remedies for finishing this map.) Goblins are manning the cannons inside the room and firing on the dwarves. Kill the goblins on Auto-Battle.
- CUTSCENE: The goblins set off a self-destruct mechanism and Yang kicks the team out of the room. Yang sacrifices himself to save the team.
- Walk back down to B13. There is no teleporting available unfortunately. Feel free to run from any fights to expedite the process.
- CUTSCENE: Golbez tries to kill the party again by destroying the bridge. Cid swings in to save the entire group on the airship. Cecil informs Cid about Yang's fate. The reunion is interrupted by a Red Wing airship. Cid leads them through the Underworld and the Enterprise starts to tear apart. As the Enterprise rises up through the exit, Cid leaps off the ship and blows the hole closed with a bomb. The party laments another lost teammate and leaves for Baron.
Eblan
- Fly back to Baron Castle and speak to the engineers in the East Courtyard. They rig a crane up to the Enterprise. You now have the ability to move the hovercraft around. Fly over the hovercraft and press A to pick it up. A also releases it.
- Go pick up the hovercraft on the northern portion of the map. It's the yellow spot that looks like a waterfall. Fly to the southwest corner of the map and drop the hovercraft off near Eblan Castle.
- Hop in the hovercraft and drive west over the rocky shoreline. There is a cave not far from the Castle. Enter and look for a hidden passage to the east near the entrance. There is a Shuriken in the chest and a Remedy in a chest a bit further east.
- Move south to note the exit and continue around the room to find a Vampire's Fang in the chest. Complete the room if you want three Bacchus Wines. The exit is in the southwest corner.
- Proceed through the small settlement and use the Inn if needed. There isn't much in the armory worth purchasing right now. Continue back into the caves at the north entrance.
- Pick up the Ether in the chest to the right and continue north. Pick up the Tent in the chest and move through the north exit into the second passage. Look for an exit on the right side of the map leading back to the first passage map.
- Move back inside to collect Spider's Silk, Hi-Potions, a Cottage potion, two Phoenix Down potions and a Silver Hourglass. Pass through the exit to the north and look for more scattered chests.
- There is a safe area on the right. Use it to save the game and pitch a tent. Look for an unmarked passage to the right. It leads to a chest with the Blood Sword. It also spawns an easy instanced fight.
- At the end of the second passage, look for the prince and Rubicante in the north portion of the screen. Prince Edge of Eblan challenges the red hooded figure to a duel.
- Rubicante reigns fire down on the poor lad and leaves the room. Rosa cures the prince and he joins the party. Double back to save the game and return to move into the Tower of Babil for a second time.
Return to Babil
- Edge transports the team into the Tower upon entering the room. Pick up the Unicorn Horn in the chest beside the door. Follow the path around the perimeter of the room and collect five Bomb Fragments for finishing the map. Leave through the southern exit.
- Walk to the right and head north around the room. Look for a path in the middle of the room. It leads to a chest with the Ogrekiller axe. There is also an enemy ambush.
- TIP: To kill the Ogres, use Rydia's summon attacks and slow their advance with Rosa. Try to keep Rosa alive to heal the group as well.
- Move back up the walkway and take a left to follow the path south. Use the door to access B3. Move to the end of the path to pick up Lilith's Kiss and backtrack to enter B4.
- Map out the room and use the exit on the west side of the room. Move around the top of the room and look for two doors on the east side. The first contains a safe point to save the game.
- Leave the safe area and enter the door on the right to access a small passage on B4. Move northwest and through the exit to B5. Move south along the walkway and travel west to reach a chest with 10,000 Gil. Continue west to map out the room or move up the middle walkway.
- Edge's parents appear on the middle walkway, but they have been transformed into monsters by Rubicante. Keep the group alive by using Rosa's heal function over and over. Simply attack the monsters until the conversation plays out.
- CUTSCENE: After Edge's parents commit suicide, Edge becomes enraged with Rubicante. Edge's anger unleashes a couple new powers and Rubicante welcomes them to fight. He even heals the entire team to make the fight fair.
- TIP: Rubicante has a nasty fire attack that you might have noticed earlier in the level. To prevent him from casting this spell, force Rubicante to close his robe using Edge's Steal ability. Keep Edge ready at all times to use his ability.
- The remainder of the fight is about being patient and choosing your attacks carefully. Kain's Jump attack is excellent for timing out an attack. Combine that with Rydia's summon abilities for maximum damage.
- Use Cecil and Rosa to heal the party. Each time Rubicante is damaged, he unleashes a weak Fira attack on the group. Try to start charging heals as he starts the counter-attack.
- CUTSCENE: Rubicante vanishes after the battle and Edge laments about the loss of his parents. Edge's troops arrive to lend a hand and Edge introduces them to the party. Kain informs Edge about Golbez and he decides to join the party permanently.
- TIP: It's tempting to move north, but you may want to backtrack to B3 and save the game before proceeding. You don't want to fight Rubicante again!
- Enter the door to the north and approach the crystals. A trapdoor sends the group hurtling down to a previous floor. Exit the room to the south. Follow the short path in B7 to the north and enter B8.
- Follow the hallway south. At the intersection, move east to collect a Hi-Potion or go west to exit. The reward for completing this room is two Ethers. This door exits out to a Red Wings airship.
- The group decided to escape in the airship. Edge names the airship the Falcon and flies it out of the ground. The airship is positioned at the Tower in the Underworld. Fly back to the Dwarven Castle and speak to the King.
- King Giott gives the party a necklace that's the key to the cave. He wants the team to retrieve the final crystal before Golbez can. Go search the infirmary on level B1 to find Cid (Still Alive!). Cid decides to roll out of bed and fix up the Falcon so it can fly over the lava.
- Leave the castle, save the game and hop in the airship to find the eighth Dark Crystal.
The Last Crystal
- Fly all over the map and uncover the hidden areas. There are a few caves in the area, a town and a forge on the southern land mass. Start with the town called Tomra in the middle of the land mass.
- Start by raiding the four chests in the unmarked building to the northwest. Collect Zeus's Wrath, a Bomb Fragment, Dry Ether and 2000 Gil. Go search the right side of the Inn for a Gaia Drum. It's in a dresser by the beds.
- Move to the armory and take a look at the new items. The diamond material is expensive, but excellent upgrades for Kain and Cecil. You should have plenty of items to sell from the Tower of Babil portion of the game.
- Move to the weapons shop and pick up new gear for Edge, Rosa and Rydia. You could also pick up a second Ogrekiller for Kain.
- Leave the town and save the game after purchasing supplies. Go check out the Forge in the southeast corner of the map. Kokkol is depressed that he can't find any adamantite for creating swords.
- The Sealed Cave is just northwest of the town. You can also explore the Sylph Cave and the Passage to the Eidolons to the far northwest, but they aren't related to the main story at this point. The Passage to the Eidolons does have fantastic weapons for the Sealed Cave though.
- TIP: If you approach either of the ancillary caves, use Rosa's Levitate spell on the entire group. The floors of the cave are poisonous to the group and damage them while walking. The spell has to be cast on each floor.
Passage to the Eidolons
- This cave is located on the small island surrounded by lava. Use the health and magic pot back at the Castle to max out your stats before flying to the cave.
- Pick up the Hi-Potion and Ether in the chests on B1. The exit to B2 is in the southwest corner of the room. Grab a Hi-Potion in the southeast corner and a Cottage potion in the northwest corner.
- The exit to B3 is on the east side of the map. Follow the winding path to the west and it wraps to the south. Look for a Phoenix Down in the first chest and check for an unmarked passage to the west. There are chests with the Poison Axe, Kiku-ichimonji, and another Hi-Potion.
- Travel east to pick up a Bestiary in a chest. Push against the wall to the east to find a hidden passage that leads north. Re-enter the lava filled area to find a chest in the middle of a room. Open it to get the Defender.
- Unfortunately the sword is guarded by dark knights and a floating fireball. Kill the fireball first with Rydia's cold attacks and regular melee attack from everyone else.
- NOTE: The Defender is an amazing weapon at this point in the game. It saps strength and accuracy a bit, but it increases Defense by 20. It also boosts speed, stamina, intellect and spirit.
- Backtrack to the middle of the cave and use the blue teleport to travel to Feymarch village. Open all the chests in the room for Ether, Rat Tail, Bestiary and 11,000 Gil. (The Rat Tail is very important. Hang onto it.)
- Look for a glowing diamond shape on the floor on the southern portion of the map. Use it to reach four chests with Dry Ether, a Potion, a Yoichi Bow and Yoichi Arrows. Use the red teleport to return.
- NOTE: The Yoichi weapons are excellent. They increase Rosa's attack power and accuracy to 100.
- Use the red teleport on the north side of the map to reach all the village shops. Purchase the Aegis Shield for Cecil and a Luminous Robe for Rosa. Pick up a Blitz Whip for Rydia in the weapons shop.
- Use the unmarked house on the north end of the map to save the game. Raid the two chests and speak to Whyt about his sick mother.
- TIP: The party can fight the King and Queen of Feymarch to gain their summoning powers for Rydia, but they are too difficult without a reflect spell for Rosa. Wait until the mid-forties to fight these two.
- Leave the town via the blue teleports and exit out of the cave. Fly back to the castle for a quick health and magic boost at the pot. Hop back in the airship and head for the Sealed Cave.
Sealed Cave
- Travel north and use the necklace to open the door. Follow the east path and drop down a rope. Take the west path and move to the south. Look for a door in the southeast section of the map.
- TIP: The Trap Doors are cursed in this cave. They attack the group and cast death spells. If you picked up the Aegis Shield in Feymarch, Cecil is immune to the attacks. A good strategy is casting Reflect on the person it's targeting.
- Enter the room and pick up an Ether potion and the Kotetsu sword for Edge. Leave the room and travel west to pick up a Bestiary. Travel northwest and move up a rope to another cursed door.
- Enter the room and pick up an Ether potion and a Hi-Potion in the chests. The two doors on the north end of the room aren't guarding anything. Kill them for experience or move down into B2 at the southeast exit.
- Move east to pick up the Phoenix Down from the chest. Move north to see a series of doors. Skip the first door (empty room) and fight the second door from the right. Go inside to pick up the Lustrous Sword.
- TIP: Skip to the fifth door from the right for a safe area to save the game and recharge.
- The third door from the right has three chests. They contain a Light Curtain, Elixir and a Fuma Shuriken. The fourth door guards an empty room and the sixth door contains the Black Cowl and another Kotetsu.
- TIP: Don't be afraid to fight the yellow dragons. Rydia's whip puts the dragons into a hold position 90% of the time.
- Move to the south on the far west side of B2. Look for a door in the southwest corner. Move through the next passage and pick up the Ether potion in the chest. Leave through the southwest exit.
- Pick up a Hi-Potion and a Phoenix Down in the chests on the right. The door to the northwest is guarding an empty room. The exit to B3 is to the south. Take the rope in the northeast portion of the cave to exit.
- There is a door to the east that's guarding an X-Potion and an Ether Dry. The exit to the room is to the west. The exit leads to another safe point to save the game or use a tent.
- Exit through the safe area to the south. This door leads to B4. This room is simply a giant circle. Walk around the perimeter and up through the center. The exit is in the middle of the room.
- Move north up the middle of the room. Cross the wooden bridge and fight the Trap Door. Pass through the door to reach the Crystal Chamber. Pick up the Dark Crystal by pressing A and exit the room to the south.
The Demon Wall
- The walls start to close in as the team leaves the crystal room. It appears there was a defense mechanism triggered after taking the crystal. This boss is known at the Demon Wall.
- The Demon Wall approaches slowly from the left side of the screen. Use Rosa to cast Slow on the wall to decrease the movement speed a bit more. Rosa also needs to cast Haste on everyone and Berserk on the three men in the group.
- TIP: With Berserk on, you won't have to worry about selecting attack with each melee character. It's done automatically. Every second counts in this fight.
- Rydia should continually summon the dragon for 2000 damage points at a time. After all the spells are cast, Rosa can cast Berserk on herself and shoot arrows at the Demon Wall.
- If the Wall reaches the team's position, it takes out the party members one at a time. Use Rosa to bring members back to life and try to keep as many people continually attacking the wall.
- After the fight, the team will gain thousands upon thousands of experience points. It's likely to gain three to four levels if there are only a couple people left alive.
- Start making your way back to the starting point. Run from all the fights until reaching a safe area to save. There's no point in risking the Demon Wall fight over something small. (You should be able to Auto-Battle anything in the caves though.)
- TIP: Strip Kain of armor and weapons after reaching B1.
- CUTSCENE: At the entrance of the cave, Golbez orders Kain to return to him with the last crystal in hand. Kain tells the group that he is still in control, but it's a trick. Kain knocks Cecil to the ground and steals the crystal. Kain runs out of the cave back to Golbez.
Fly Me to the Moon
- Hop in the Falcon and fly to the Dwarven Castle to speak to the King. He mentions a Mysidian legend about a Lunar Whale. He thinks that the Elder in Mysidia is praying to revive the whale. Cid shows up to attach a drill to the Falcon so the team can leave the Underworld. Cid collapses again during the job.
- Leave the Castle and hop in the Falcon. Look for a pile of rubble in the northeast corner. Click B over it and the Falcon rises to the surface. This is also the place to return to the Underworld.
- Before heading to Mysidia, there are plenty of tasks to finish up. Swap out for the Enterprise, grab the hovercraft and fly northeast towards Mythril. Look for a small cave to the southeast and use the hovercraft to enter the Adamant Isle Grotto.
- Climb the stairs and speak to the tiny people. The father collects animal tails. Speak to the father and give him the Rat Tail that you picked up in Feymarch. The father awards Cecil a piece of Adamantite.
- Fly back down to the Underworld and look for Kokkol's Forge in the southeast corner of the map. He's upstairs in his bed. Speak to him and give him the Adamantite. He also takes the Mythgraven Blade from Cecil.
- He needs time to forge the blade, so go investigate Slyph Cave during the wait period. It's at the northwest corner of the map.
Slyph Cave
- Cast Levitate just inside the entrance. Move east to collect Angel Arrows and a Bestiary. Move south to exit the room.
- TIP: There aren't any enemies that pose a large threat, but you may want to run from the wizard with multiple frogs. He orders his frog minions to transform the party into frogs. It's extremely annoying to avoid.
- Walk around the room and take the northern exit to B3. Grab the Hi-Potion, Maiden's Kiss and Faerie Rod from the three chests to the north. Move back to the B3 entrance and look for an unmarked passage that leads east. Follow it and enter the room to B2.
- Move south to collect a Bomb Core, a Remedy potion and 5000 Gil in four chests in the middle of the path. Continue south to pick up another Ether potion, two Maiden's Kiss potions and an Emergency Exit. Use the hole in the floor to drop down a level.
- Travel north and look for an unmarked passage at the end of the tunnel that leads west. Use the red teleport pad to reach six treasure chests. All of these chests are guarded by powerful enemies.
- From left to right, the top three chests contain a Red Fang, a White Fang and a Blue Fang. The bottom three chests contain an Engetsurin, the Avenger and Medusa Arrows. The Avenger is worth getting, but the rest of the treasure is a nuisance to grab.
- Leave via the exit to the right. Visit the health and magic pot at the castle or head back into the cave immediately. Head through the south exit of the first room and move through the south exit of the second room.
- There is a save area to save the game to the east. There is also an unmarked passage north of the safe area leading to a chest with the Elven Bow. (Don't bother equipping the Elven Bow) There are two chests with Cottage potions to the west.
- Move into the first door along the northern path and pick up Arctic Wind, a Gold Apple, a Soma Drop, a Hi-Potion and an Ether potion. Return to the previous room and move north.
- Before entering the next room, look to for an unmarked passage to the west. Follow it to the northeast and open the chest for the Mage Masher. Unfortunately it also spawns a fight with toads.
- Return through the unmarked passage and into the next room. Grab the Elixir on the left side of the room and follow the southern path. Enter the Sylph house at the end of the path.
- Look to the left side of the room. It's Yang! He's laid up in bed right now. Grab the Kiku-ichimonji and the Aura Staff from the chests. Take the stairs up twice and the party is outside the cave again.
- Hop in the airship and fly to Fabul Castle in the regular world. Look for Yang's wife in the west tower. Tell her about Yang's location and she gives you a Frying Pan.
- Return to Sylph Cave and retrace the path to Yang. Press A near Yang and select the Frying Pan. Yang wakes up, but is too weak to travel with the team. The Slyphs offer their power to Rydia as a summoning power in place of Yang's fighting skills. Yang gives the team his Focus augment as well.
- Return to Yang's wife to inform her of Yang's health and she gives you the Knife. Hang onto this item. Similar to the Fuma Shuriken, it does tremendous damage when thrown by Edge.
Decant Abilities
- There are a few abilities scattered around the World Map to collect. Look for Rubicante's Blaze ability inside the Eblan cave. It's near the area of Rubicante and Edge's first meeting.
- Travel to Mist to pick up the MP +50% Augment. It's in the northwest house in the corner. You can also purchase the Membership Badge in Troia to gain access to the Gil Hunt augment. It's not worth the cost though.
- Go to Castle Baron and visit the King since you have visited the land of the Eidolons. This turns into a boss fight with Odin. Odin has a fantastic decant named Darkness, but it has to be stolen by Edge. Rydia also gets the power to summon Odin after the fight.
- TIP: When fighting Odin, beware of his devastating sword attack. Put the entire team into a defensive stance when he swings the sword over his head.
- Fly the airship to Mysidia and enter the village.
The Lunar Whale
- CUTSCENE: The Elder greets the party and summons them to the Tower of Prayer. The Elder is seen on top of the Tower trying to summon the Lunar Whale. A giant whirlpool forms to the west of Mysidia and the Ship of Light (Lunar Whale) rises from the epicenter. The ship is designed to travel between this world and the moon.
- Save the game and hop in the new ship. There are sleep pods and a Chocobo on the lower half of the ship. The cube to the north can be used for regular World Map navigation and the Crystal is for making the trip to the moon. Click on the Crystal when ready.
- Fly the Whale around the moon's surface and open up the entire map. If you need supplies, head to the Hummingway Abode cave. It's the southern-most cave on the map. It's in a small oval shaped pit. The supplier is on the right side of the cave.
- TIP: You can also find the Level Lust augment on the right side of the cave.
- The target of this level is reaching the door beneath the large Blue Crystal. Land the Whale near the steps to the northwest of the crystal. Enter the west passage and look for the exit on the opposite side of the room. (The reward for completing the room is three Alarm potions.
- Leave through the northern exit and walk to the right along the path. Enter the east passage and travel along the southwest hall to exit. You can also complete this room for another three Alarm potions.
- Move west and enter the first floor of the Crystal Palace. Travel east to find a brown square in the floor. Click A to recharge magic levels. There is a similar square to the west to recharge health and reset character status. Move to the middle of the room to meet Fusoya.
- CUTSCENE: The group meets a being called Fusoya. He is charged with watching over the slumber of the Lunarians. The Lunarians are the people of the moon. They are survivors of a planetary war and looked for solace on the Blue Planet. One of the survivors is manipulating Golbez in an attempt to erase all life on the Blue Planet. His name is Zemus. He's trying to unite the crystals and transport the Giant of Babil to the Blue Planet. Another survivor named Kluya created the Lunar Whale and brought some of the Lunarian technology to the Blue Planet. He fell in love with a woman on the planet. This woman gave birth to two children, one of which is Cecil. Fusoya joins the party after this revelation.
- NOTE: You can return to the Earth's surface to continue the story or investigate the Lair of the Father to get new armor for Cecil or Edge.
Lair of the Father
- This cave is located on the east side of the map. It's in the middle of the circle shaped area. The map completion award is a Gold Apple for each floor.
- TIP: The enemies in this cave aren't extremely tough, but they do pose a threat. Use the Toad spell on any magic dealers to nullify their attacks. You also may want to avoid everyone and head straight for the armor.
- Travel south in the first cave to pick up the Genji Gloves in a chest. They don't do much for Edge, but they do provide better magical protection for Cecil.
- Backtrack to the north and move to the east on the next path. Look for an unmarked path to the north at the first intersection. Follow it east to reach a chest with the Genji Shield.
- Return to the main walkway and continue down the southern path to find the exit to B2. Follow the path west and look for another chest after the path breaks north. Pick up the Genji Armor in the chest. Move to the east side of the room to pick up the Genji Helm.
- You have all the armor at this point. You can return to the Lunar Whale and fly back to the Blue Planet to meet the Giant of Babil. Otherwise continue on to meet Bahamut.
- TIP: You may want to teleport out of the cave and save before continuing on.
- When you arrive at the skinny walkway, a Behemoth attacks the group. This is a forced battle and cannot be run away from. The Behemoth is a nasty creature that answers magic attacks with a devastating Tsunami attack. It also counters nearly all physical attacks.
- The trick to defeating the Behemoth is keeping Cecil alive with group heals. Cecil should heal himself as well. Avoid all black magic attacks from Rydia, but she can summon the Dragon for help. Edge can attack all he wants as long as his health is decent. Edge is also good at evading the Behemoth's attacks.
- Continue through the skinny path and exit to B3 at the northeast corner of the map. Move south and prepare for two more Behemoth fights on the upcoming skinny walkway.
- TIP: Teleport out and save after the third Behemoth fight. They don't respawn and it's an extreme pain to fight them again if Bahamut kills the party.
- Finishing mapping out the area for another Golden Apple and walk up the stairs to speak to Bahamut. He launches into a boss battle.
- The key to winning the Bahamut fight is slowing him down. He counts from 5 to 1 and launches a MegaFlare spell on the party. Cast Slow on Bahamut and he casts Reflect on himself.
- Start casting Haste on the melee characters. Shell is also good to have activated before the fire attack. Avoid all magical attacks accept for Rydia's summoning powers.
- Remember to put everyone in a defensive stance when the countdown nears the end. Try to time healing spells right after the attack. This version of Bahamut doesn't counter physical attacks. Just hack away until he falls.
- Teleport out after the fight and heal up in the Lunar Whale.
The Giant
- CUTSCENE: The group flies back to the Blue Planet and finds the entire world shaking. The Tower of Babil blows open and the Giant of Babil emerges to destroy the world. He shoots lasers out of his hands and sets the surrounding area on fire. Suddenly the Red Wings and Dwarves show up to assault the Giant with airships and tanks. Cid is commanding an airship and Yang is commanding a tank. Palom and Porom are seen as well. The Elder lifted the stone spell they cast on themselves. Prince Edward is on another airship. The Giant reels back from the attack and the group decide to go inside the giant. The group gets Cid to fly them into the Giant's mouth.
- The team lands in the Giant's Mouth. Travel north and use the blue teleport to reach the Giant's Neck. Complete the very small map to receive three X-Potions. Use the blue teleport to reach the Giant's Chest.
- TIP: The enemies in the Giant are typically all metal. Use electric attacks and watch out for the beam attacks from the floating eyeballs. Keep Rosa on heal duties.
- Travel to the south and follow the linear path. Grab a Fuma Shuriken in the chest to the north. Continue along the walkway to the south and pick up a Hi-Potion in a chest.
- Cross the bridge to the east and pick up an Ether potion in the third chest. Continue along the eastern path and it breaks north. Look for a fourth chest with Yoichi Arrows at the northern point of the room.
- Finishing mapping the room by traveling southeast. The reward is five Remedy potions. Pick up the Siren potion in the fifth chest and backtrack to the northern blue teleport.
- The team is in the Giant's Stomach. Walk directly north to find a chest with a Silver Apple. Move east and hug the wall to collect a Soma Drop potion in the northeast corner.
- Move up the path in the center to find a red teleport exit. The reward for mapping out this room is an Ether Dry potion. Use the teleport to reach the Inner Passage.
- Move south and pick up an Elixir potion on a small path leading north. Continue down the main walkway to find a safe area near another rabbit. Talk to the rabbit if you need supplies. Use a Cottage on the safe area and save the game.
- Travel north to gain an Elixir potion for completing the map. Use the teleport to reach the Inner Stair passage. Move north to meet the four elemental enemies again.
Elemental Archfiends
- The elemental bosses ambush the team and it's time for a long fight. Thankfully the team only has to face one at a time. The first fight is with Scarmiglione.
- Scarmiglione is an easy boss by comparison to the rest of the group. Throw Elixir potions at him to do 9999 damage per shot. It's also a good idea to get Protect and Shell spells on the group before killing him completely.
- Cagnazzo is more painful. Use Thunder attacks when the water starts surging around him to avoid the Tsunami spell. These have to come from Rydia or Fusoya. He has plenty of magical counters as well.
- Use Slow on Cagnazzo and Haste on Rydia. Summon Ramuh on Cagnazzo over and over. Feel free to use melee attacks when he retreats to his shell.
- Barbariccia is next and her tornado attacks cannot be stopped this time. Keep the healers free to recharge the group immediately. Cast Slow on her and attack with the melee characters until she takes the tornado form.
- Use Rydia to summon Ramuh again. She is weak to the dragon's attacks. Be careful of melee attacks as she has a nasty habit of countering with a fire spell.
- TIP: Use melee characters to apply MP potions to the magic dealers, Rydia especially. Cecil is also good for raising knocked out teammates or removing status effects.
- The final boss is Rubicante. Cast Haste on Edge to keep his Steal ability ready. Similar to the previous encounter with Rubicante, you have to use Steal to make him close the cape. Otherwise Blaze decimates the group.
- Rydia should summon Titan on Rubicante until he falls. Keep the group healed with Cecil, Rosa and Fusoya.
- Return to the previous room to save the game after the fight. Move back into the Inner Stair passage and move north to the teleport for the Control Core.
Control Core
- Move north to enter a fight with the CPU. There are three nodes to destroy. The Attack Node is on the left, the Defense Node is on the right and the Control Node is in the middle.
- Unfortunately this battle is extremely random. The Attack Core launches a Laser Barrage that typically decimates everyone by Cecil. The trick to his fight is destroying the Attack Core immediately.
- TIP: Remember the knife from Yang's wife? The fastest way to destroy the attack core is using Edge to throw the knife at the Attack Core. It does 9999 damage. A couple more hits from Cecil should eliminate it quickly. (You can also use a Fuma Shuriken if the knife got used previously.)
- After the Attack Node is blown up, focus on the Control Node. It's tempting to destroy the Defense Node, but the Control Node respawns both Nodes if that happens.
- Fortunately the Control Node is weak to thunder attacks and the Defense Node is strengthened by them. Bring the team back to life if the Laser Barrage killed them and use Rydia to summon Ramuh. The rest of the team should use melee attacks only due to the constant Reflect spell on the Control Node.
- The Control Node never attacks during this process. Start on the Defense Node after the Control Node is destroyed. It has no offensive attacks and blows up after a few rounds of melee attacks.
- CUTSCENE: The Giant stops moving and Golbez appears. Fusoya casts a spell on Golbez and he is revealed to be the second son of Kluya. Cecil and Golbez are brothers. The scene shifts to Kluya's wife Cecilla giving birth to a baby boy. The boy is named Theodor and is next seen at about age 10.
- Take control of little Theodor and go outside. Move northeast and look for Theodor's father at the edge of the pond. Speak to him and return to the house to find Cecilla on the floor. She is having pregnancy problems with a second child. Theodor returns to bed.
- CUTSCENE: The scene shifts to the morning and Kluya has been attacked. Theodor tries to cure his father but it doesn't work. Kluya dies and the baby is born weeks later. Unfortunately Cecilla dies during childbirth. Theodor starts to become manipulated by an evil voice and abandons the baby in a forest. The King of Baron finds the child and raises Cecil.
- CUTSCENE: The scene shifts back to the present day and Golbez leaves to take on Zemus. Fusoya goes with him to help out. The giant starts to collapse and Kain appears. He offers safe passage out of the crumbling giant. Kain is free from Golbez once again.
Odds and Ends
- TIP: If you want Rosa and Rydia back in the party, make a quick trip to the moon and fly back to the Blue Planet.
- Head down into the Underworld and swing by Kokkol's Forge to pick up the sword. The Excalibur increases strength, accuracy and attack power. Unfortunately Cecil loses the defense boost from the Defender.
- You can also pick up extra Fuma Shurikens from the man behind the counter at Kokkol's Forge. 50,000 Gil each, but they do 7000 to 9000 damage points on a boss. It's a good idea to invest in several before leaving for the moon.
- If you want to go Decant Ability hunting, check the roof of Castle Baron for a guard holding the +50% HP ability. Rosa could really use this ability since she is the primary healer.
- TIP: If you are looking for a place to grind out some levels, head back to the first section of the Eblan Cavern. (You need the hovercraft to get there.) The spawns offer about 4000 to 8000 experience points per fight and it can all be done on Auto-Battle. Remember to switch the Battle Speed down to 1 for quicker fights. This cave also has Giant Gloves item drops all the time. If you have the Counter-Attack and Draw Attacks abilities on Cecil, it speeds up the process even more.
- TIP: This is also a great time to return to Feymarch and fight the royalty in the basement of the library. It's decent experience and shouldn't be tough at the current difficulty.
The Crystal Cave
- TIP: Don't bother attempting this section unless the party is in the low sixties at a minimum.
- Fly back to the moon and make your way to the Crystal Palace. Look for the Bless augment on the ground near the first crystal room. Walk north to find the room with the eight crystals lined up. Move to the center of the room.
- The eight crystals transport the party to Lunar Subterrane B1. Move north up the stairs and walk around the perimeter of the path. Look for an unmarked passage to the east.
- Follow it northeast until reaching another walkway. Move along the walkway to the west and look for a chest at the end of the path. Grab the Black Garb and fight the Armored Fiend instanced battle.
- NOTE: The Black Garb is a fantastic upgrade for Edge. It increases speed, defense and evasion.
- Backtrack to the entrance and look for an unmarked path that leads west. Use the teleport to transport the party to the opposite side of the room and move down the stairs to the south.
- Move north and look for a chest containing the Sage's Staff. It's a poor upgrade for Rosa and it certainly worth skipping the instanced battle.
- TIP: The instanced battle on this floor is typically dragons. Rydia's whip usually freezes them in place and the team can melee the poor dragon to death. They are also worth about 15,000 experience points.
- Follow the path west and look for another teleport to the south. Use it to transport across the room. Move west and south along the passage. Look for a set of stairs in the southwest corner.
- Move to the north in the small passage on B3. There is a katana floating on a platform just ahead. The Murasame katana provides a five point attack boost and a ten point accuracy boost to Edge's previous weapon.
The White Dragon
- If you decide to take the Murasame by pressing A, the party has to face off against the White Dragon. The White Dragon has an extremely painful attack by whipping the end of his tail and he likes to cast a nasty wind based attack.
- The trick to beating the White Dragon is using Rosa's Blink to protect Cecil. The dragon continues to attack Cecil, but cannot manage to land a hit. Use regular melee attacks with Cecil and Edge. Kain should use the Jump ability and Rydia can summon the help of Ramuh.
- TIP: It's a good idea to teleport out of the cave and save the game just outside the Crystal Palace. It's a pain to do all that over again and the party has to return to the first room anyway. Don't forget to get the free health and magic boosts in the first room of the Palace.
- Return to B1 and take the southern stairs this time. The map completion reward is 10 Hi-Potions. Walk along the path to the south and head east. Continue walking east into an unmarked passage. Follow it northwest to gain access to the Flame Whip.
- TIP: The Flame Whip is a ten point attack upgrade for Rydia's previous weapon. Don't use it on dragons though. It triggers an automatic flame coun
