Fell Pony

The Fell Pony is a stout working pony bred in the mountainous terrain of Cumbria, in Northern England. Similar to the Dales Pony, the Fell has a thick build and short legs, lending it a low center of gravity and excellent balance. Fells are touted by equine enthusiasts for their gentleness and intelligence.¹

History

Fell Ponies are believed to be descendants of the European pony, which arrived from mainland Europe sometime around 15,000 BC. The influence of the rugged terrain around Cumbria produced a short, hardy breed that may have later been infused with the genes of foreign horses, brought the region by the Romans.² The Fell helped build Cumbria, being used in agriculture and transport up through the Industrial Revolution, when it was used to haul iron ore North-to-South. In 1916, a Fell Pony Society was founded, "to foster and keep pure the old breed,"², but by the 1940s, the breed was nearly extinct. A gradual revival has been at-hand ever since, with intervention by enthusiasts and equestrians. Semi-wild herds of Fell Ponies still roam Cumbria.³
