Facebook Palestine Listing
Guide Note: Social networking site Facebook's debate over allowing users to list Palestine as their home country was further complicated when Jewish settlers in the West Bank who use the site became upset that the location on their profile was listed by default as Palestine.
Facebook responded by allowing users in the area to choose between listing their location as Israel or Palestine, which has raised questions as to what roles, if any, an internet-based social network should play in a geopolitical dispute.
Fast Facts:
- Facebook removed Palestine as a location in October 2006
- Offered West Bank and Gaza as an alternative listing
- Added Palestine as a location again in early 2007
- Official stance is to only acknowledge areas that the United States recognizes as territories
