History

Mark Zuckerberg founded Facebook from his dorm room at Harvard in 2004. It was first available only to Harvard students. Over the next two years, he opened it up first to other Ivy League colleges, then to a broader base of colleges, and then to the general public.

Founding controversy

Founders of another social networking site founded by Harvard students, ConnectU, have argued in court that Zuckerberg stole their code after working for them briefly as a programmer. They have sued twice in court. Facebook has sued ConnectU as well, accusing ConnectU of hacking into the site and email harvesting.

Facebook Safety Control

On May 8, 2008 Facebook agreed to provide additional safety measures for its site. The agreement between 49 U.S. states and the District of Columbia attorneys general with Facebook will increase efforts to protect its young members from sexual predators.
