Guide Note
The extracellular matrix specifically refers to the outside of a cell. For animal cells, the structure of the extracellular matrix is made up of collagen, proteoglycans and other glycoproteins (i.e. laminin and fibronectin). Plant cells on the other hand, have an extracellular matrix made up of cellulose. Research in the area of regenerative medicine has used the extracellular matrix of a pig's bladder to regrow a portion of a man's finger.1 This has given hope to many areas of medicine that deal with cell destruction.
