Primitive Survivor
Because the Exmoor shares distinct characteristics with prehistoric fossil remains2, the breed is believed to be descended from the original equine residents of the British Isles, who arrived via land-bridge over 130,000 years ago.3
Conservation
As conservationists strive to prevent the Exmoor from going extinct, Great Britain's primordial pony has gained its own role as a conservationist. Small herds of Exmoors are kept on nature reserves, where their ability to graze on certain invasive plants allows desired foliage to thrive.3
