Guide Note

E3 2008, formally known as the E3 Media & Business Summit, is an annual video game trade show owned and operated by the Entertainment Software Association. The E3 Media & Business Summit is a closed event for an estimated 4,000 industry insiders.¹ The event provides video game developers with an opportunity to display upcoming software titles, new consoles and other industry-related products.

A Brief History of E3

In 2006, it was announced that E3 would no longer be an open trade show. Due to rising costs, many companies no longer found it financially practical to participate in the expo.² The ESA trimmed down the size of the event from 60,000 attendees to 4,000; companies now must receive an invitation to attend.³ The focus of the new E3 Media & Business Summit is to "provide a professional and efficient environment...with media and other industry leaders."⁴

In 2006, IDG World Expo created the E for All expo, a trade show reminescent of the original E3 and open to the public. Endorsed by the ESA, it will take place in October 2008, at the Los Angeles Convention Center.⁵ ⁶
