Donatello was an Italian artist from the early Renaissance era. His sculptures were valued for their ability to capture realistic facial emotions.

Brief Background

Donatello was born in Florence, Italy. His father was a member of the wool comber's guild. Donatello earned his living during his younger years by working in a goldsmith's shop. This is also where he received his first training as an artist.

He soon began to get more paid work as artist and was eventually commissioned by Cosimo de' Medici who was one of the most prominent art patrons of the period. Medici asked Donatello to create his David, which is now one of his most well known pieces of sculpture.

Donatello briefly left Florence for Rome but soon returned and continued to produce artwork until his death in 1466.

Donatello Timeline

1386 – He was born in Florence. He was the son of Nicolo di Betto Bardi.
1409-1411 He executed the colossal seated figure of Saint John the Evangelist
1411 – He worked at a statue of St. Mark for the church of Orsanmichele until 1413.
1415 - He executed five statues for the campanile of Florence's Duomo on this year until 1426.
1417 - He completed a St. George for the confraternity of the Cuirass-makers
1425 - He executed the notable Crucifix for Santa Croce.
1425 - He collaborated with Michelozzo on the funerary monument of Antipope John XXIII
1427 - Completed a marble panel for the funerary monument of cardinal Rainaldo Brancacci.
1430 – Received a bronze David from Cosimo de' Medici, for the court of his Palazzo Medici.
1435 - He executed the Annunciation for the Cavalcanti altar in Santa Croce.
1437 - He worked to the Old Sacristy of San Lorenzo in Florence
1440 - He executed a bust of Young with Cameo now in the Bargello.
1456 - He worked at a wooden Madonna now the in the Duomo Museum.
1466 - Died December 13 in Florence, buried in the Basilica of San Lorenzo.
