Dominik Hasek

Dominik Hasek is a retired professional hockey player. He won the award for outstanding goaltender in the NHL six times, and was a member of two Stanley Cup championship teams with the Detroit Red Wings.

Early NHL Career

Hasek played several seasons in his native Czechoslovakia, starting at just six years old. He was originally drafted 199th overall in the 1983 NHL Draft by the Chicago Blackhawks, however did not join the team until 1990. Playing in 25 games over two seasons in Chicago, Hasek was traded to the Buffalo Sabres on August 7, 1992. He won his first of six Vezina Trophies in 1994 for the top goaltender in the NHL. In 1996 he was selected for his first of five NHL All-Star Games. In 1998 he led the Czech Team to a gold medal in the Winter Olympics. Hasek also was involved in the controversial "No Goal" during the 1999 Stanley Cup Finals. Hasek was in net when Brett Hull scored the third overtime Cup winning goal. The goal was allowed however many critics believe it was not a legal play.

Wings, Sens and Wings Again

Hasek was traded to the Detroit Red Wings on June 30, 2001, leading the team to a 2002 Stanley Cup Championship. He retired after the season, but rejoined the Red Wings on July 8, 2003. The following year he signed as a free agent with the Ottawa Senators, playing one season before returning to Detroit on July 31, 2006. He entered the 2007-08 season as the oldest goaltender in the league and the second oldest player in the league at the age of 42. After helping the Red Wings win the Stanley Cup in 2008, he announced his retirement.
