Users post and rank articles/blogs, which are ordered by popularity on the Digg website. Digg was created by former Tech TV personalty Kevin Rose and launched in December 2004. Rose had come up with the idea the previous fall and hired a programmer from Elance at $10 per hour to bring his creation to life. By February of 2006 Digg had become a huge force in the area of social news as millions of users turned to it for their daily news. Since its success there has been several rumors of an acquisition however none have yet to be confirmed. Along with this success several companies have attempted to launch services to rig or artificially inflate a stories popularity.
