The Detroit Shock are a women's professional basketball team. They compete in the Eastern Conference of the WNBA. Since their founding in 1998, they have won the WNBA Championship twice.

Early History

The franchise was originally granted to the city of Detroit in 1998. The Shock joined the league as part of the first WNBA expansion with the Washington Mystics. They failed to make the playoffs their first season, but did in 1999, losing in the second round.
