Daytona International Speedway
Guide Note: Founded in 1947, the Daytona International Speedway is the home to the premiere NASCAR event of the year, the Daytona 500. Located in Daytona Beach Florida, about 90 minutes south of Jacksonville, the speedway has a capacity of 167,785, and hosts a series of racing events throughout the year. Specifically, it is the focus of attention for the 4-week period in late January and early February known as Speedweeks, when several important race events are held. These include the 24 Hours Of Daytona, Daytona ARCA 200, Budweiser Shootout, Daytona Twin 150s, and the race known as the "Super Bowl of NASCAR", the Daytona 500. In 2008, the speedway will help mark the 50th anniversary of the first NASCAR race held, the 1959 Daytona 500. The late Dale Earnhardt, who died on the final lap of the 2001 Daytona 500, is the record holder at the speedway with 34 career race wins. Bill Elliott is the track record with the fastest NASCAR lap speed on the 2 1/2 mile oval timed at 210.364 MPH.
