David Wright

David Wright is an All-Star Third Baseman for the New York Mets. He is widely regarded as one of the best all-around third baseman in the game, winning a silver slugger award and a Gold Glove award in 2007. He has established himself as a leader in the Mets clubhouse and in 2006 and 2007 was a legitimate candidate for the National League Most Valuable player award.

Early Life

David Allen Wright was born in Norfolk, Virginia on December 20, 1982. He would attend Hickory High School in Virginia where he would be named to three All-State teams and the Virginia Player of the Year. He would garner interest from elite college baseball programs and Major League baseball teams, before deciding to forgo college and declare himself eligible for the major League Baseball Draft in 2001.

Pro Career

Wright was selected with the 38th pick in the 2001 Major League Baseball Draft by the New York Mets. He would make his major league debut on July 21, 2004. He would establish himself as the everyday third basemann for the team. In his first season he would hit .293, with 14 home runs. He would also earn Rookie of the Year honors from This Year In Baseball. He would be named to his first All-Star appearance in 2006 playing third base for the National League All-Stars. In 2006, he would sign a 6 year contract worth $55 million dollars for the New York Mets. In 2007 Wright would earn a Gold Glove and a Silver Slugger award at third base.
