David Bonior

Guide Note:

David Bonior was a Democratic Representative for the State of Michigan. He also served as Democratic Whip from 1995 to 2002. Bonior represented Michigan's 12th congressional district from 1977 to 1993 and proceeded to serve as the congressman for the state's 10th district until he resigned from office in 2003.

David Bonior and two other anti-war lawmakers, Mike Thompson and Jim McDermott, made a controversial trip to Iraq in 2002, which is under scrutiny for being funded by Saddam Hussein's Intelligence Agency. Muthanna Al-Hanooti, an official at a Detroit-based non-profit, arranged for the meeting and has been charged with being an Iraqi spy in an investigation that is ongoing. Bonior and the two other U.S. representatives have all denied knowing the trip was funded by the Hussein Intelligence Committee.
