Career
A lifelong fan of comic books, Dave Cockrum started his career as an inker for DC Comics. He worked on Superman-related titles and Legion of Super-Heroes, which he later became lead penciler for.
In 1975, Cockrum and writer Len Wein produced the first issue of Giant-Size X-Men, introducing new characters to the mutant team. For the series, Cockrum and Wein co-created Colossus, Storm and Nightcrawler.2
Cockrum continued working until his death in November 2006 due to diabetes. He was 63.
