Guide Note: Prime Minister Gordon Brown announced on March 19, 2008 that he would meet with the Dalai Lama during his already-scheduled visit to England in May, 2008. This announcement was immediately applauded by pro-Tibetan Independence advocates. China issued a standard statement reiterating its belief that the Dalai Lama is engaged in a political campaign with the goal of splitting up China. This statement aside, the overall response from China was more conciliatory. Premier Wen Jiabao stated that he was willing to hold talks with the Dalai Lama, provided that "he does not support the total independence of Tibet, and that he renounces violence." A specific date has not yet been set for the meeting.
