Nixon earned her first television spot in 1979 in an after school special on ABC. The very next year, she made her film debut with Little Darlings and her first Broadway appearance in the The Philadelphia Story revival.

After many minor and major roles in movies, television, and Broadway, she became in instant commercial success with her role as the straight-laced lawyer "Miranda Hobbes" on Sex and the City starring Sarah Jessica Parker.
