Guide Note: The 2002 American film
Confessions of a Dangerous Mind is based on the life story of
Chuck Barris.
Chuck Barris was a host, creator and producer of popular game shows such as
The Newlywed Game and
The Gong Show. He also claims he worked for the
CIA as an assassin in the 1960s and 1970s. Although his secret
CIA affairs have never been confirmed the movie does not insinuate anything.
Confessions of a Dangerous Mind was produced by George Clooney who also appeared as Jim Byrd. George Clooney was inspired to work on the film because his own father, Nick Clooney was the host of The Money Maze from 1974-75.
Sam Rockwell portrayed the lead role of Chuck Barris. Johnny Depp was originally cast as the lead but after filming began George Clooney took over directing and changed the lead. Drew Barrymore, Julia Roberts and Rutger Hauer also play roles in the film. Dick Clark, Brad Pitt and Matt Damon also make small appearances.
The film didn't do very well in the box office but still won seven awards. Those awards include: the Berlin Film Festival awards for best actor Sam Rockwell, a Satellite Award, Las Vegas Film Critics Society Awards among others. It also received another seven nominations. Confessions of a Dangerous Mind has gone on to become a cult film.
