Uses of wreaths in general date back to the first century Roman times, while Christmas wreaths were first noted in the third century by the writer Tertullian.

Christians often use wreaths to celebrate Advent, with a wreath containing four candles, each used to celebrate the four weeks of Advent. Other modern Christmas wreaths are used more for decorative purposes, starting with a frame of either wood, styrofoam or wire, then adding leaves or Tree needles to form the base. Wreaths are then decorated further with bows, fruit, pinecones and other ornaments.
