Chris Chelios
All-Star defenseman Chris Chelios currently plays for the Detroit Red Wings in the National Hockey League. In 2007, he was awarded the initial Mark Messier Leadership Award.1

Early Career
Prior to his NHL career, Chelios attended and played for the University of Wisconsin. He was drafted 40th overall in the 1981 NHL Draft by the Montreal Canadiens. He made his NHL debut in the 1983-1984 season, playing 12 games. He was selected for his first of 12 NHL All-Star Game appearances the same season. Two years later Chelios won his first Stanley Cup with the Canadiens in 1986. In 1989 he won his first of three Norris Trophies as the top defenseman in the league. He played with the Canadiens until June 29, 1990 when he was traded to the Chicago Blackhawks.1
Chicago and Beyond
Chelios played nine seasons in his hometown of Chicago. He served as team captain from 1995 until he was traded to the Detroit Red Wings on March 23, 1999. Blending in with the many veterans in Detroit, Chelios won his second Stanley Cup with the Wings in 2002. He set several personal records in the recent years with the Wings, including the most games played by an American born player and also the most penalty minutes of any active player in the league.1
