World War II

• Charles Durning joined the U.S. Army when he was 17 years old. On June 6, 1944, Durning was one of the first wave of soldiers who landed on Omaha Beach during the D-Day invasion. He was seriously wounded in late June 1944. Taken prisoner during the Battle of the Bulge, Durning was one of a handful of survivors of the attack on American POWs at Malmedy, Belgium. Durning was honored with three Purple Hearts and a Silver Star and in 2008 he received France's highest honor, the National Order of the Legion of Honor.²
