Guide Note
Chaos theory is a term used in mathematics and physics to describe the attempt to find order in apparently random events. Chaos theory has many applications in the fields of biology, computer science, economics, ecology, physics and engineering.
Fast Facts
- Meteorologist Edward Lorenz found that small changes produce large changes long-term
- Mathematical term chaos was coined by James A. Yorke
- Also referred to as the Butterfly Effect
Glossary
- Butterfly Effect: The notion that minor attributes in starting conditions can be responsible for vast difference in later conditions. Draws it's name from the fact that a butterfly flapping it's wings, even though a slight change to existing conditions, could be the beginning of a process that eventually leads to a Hurricane.
