Guide Note
The Final Fantasy series began in 1987 and was published by Square. There are 28 games in the franchise, plus three animated productions, two full-length CGI movies and several print adaptations. Many consider Final Fantasy to be one of the best game series of all time and several games in the series ranked in IGN's top 100 video games of all time. Final Fantasy X-2 is the only direct sequel to a previous game.

Similarities Between Games
All the games share similar gameplay elements, like character names. The games also share similar plots, revolving around a dark force that is attempting to destroy the world. Most of the games fall into the RPG genre although Final Fantasy XI is an MMORPG. There are also several turn-based strategy editions: Final Fantasy Tactics A2: Grimoire of the Rift and Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions. The gameplay for the majority of the Final Fantasy games are based off of turn-based mechanics, although some games utilize the Active Battle System. All games in the series are noted for their storyline as well as for their music. The music director until 2004 was Nobuo Uematsu.
