While a popular myth holds that cat fur itself is an allergen, the allergic reaction is actually caused by a glycoprotein (a molecule containing carbohydrate and protein²) found in feline skin and saliva.³ Symptoms include itching, watery eyes, and the usual array of histamine reactions. Common strategies for alleviating symptoms include taking medications—designed either to prevent allergens from entering the sinuses, or prevent the reaction itself—and regularly grooming the cat to reduce dander.⁴
