Guide Note

The Cascade Mountains is a large mountains range in western North America. It was formed by volcanic activity millions of years ago. Where it begins in Northern California, the range is 30 to 50 miles wide, and it narrows as it goes north; at its northernmost point in British Columbia, Canada, it is only about 10 miles wide. It gets a lot of snow on its west side, due to its nearness to the Pacific Ocean.

The Cascades are a rugged backdrop for enjoying outdoor activities. Cross country skiing, mountain climbing, hiking, backpacking, camping and rock climbing are all done by thousands of locals and visitors each year.
