Captain America's Origin
During World War II, Steve Rogers was one of many young men who was picked to take part in a secret military project. After the selection process, he was given an experimental serum that would give him enhanced strength, agility, and endurance. He used his new abilities to fight against the Germans as a masked soldier. After the war, Rogers fell from a plane flying over the North Atlantic Ocean, and was frozen into a state of suspended animation. After he recovered, he became the leader of The Avengers.
Alter Ego
Steve Rogers was the original Captain America, but in a storyline published in 2007 taking place in the aftermath of Marvel's Civil War event, Steve Rogers was assassinated by a sniper. Though the superhero community mourned his death, the Captain America persona lived on. Rogers' former sidekick Bucky Barnes took up the Captain America identity.
