Canker Sores

Canker Sores are small sores that develop on the inside or your mouth, on the tongue, inside the cheeks and on the inner lips. Though the exact cause remains unclear it is suspected that there is a combination of things that contribute to getting canker sores. Certain foods, hormonal changes, allergies are just a few suspected causes. Canker sores are often confused with cold sores. A canker sore is not caused by the herpes virus and does not occur on the outside of the mouth like a cold sore does. Most canker sores go away in a week or two. If you have persistent problems with canker sores that wont heal it is recommended that you see a physician. Fast Facts:

4. First symptoms: Burning or tingling sensation
5. Round or oval
6. Yellow or white center with red border
7. Can be painful

9. Can also cause fever, swollen lymph nodes and listlessness
10. Treatment: Mouth rinses, topical pastes, oral medications, supplements
11. Prevention: healthy diet, good oral hygiene
12. More common in women than men
13. Family history can increase risk of getting canker sores
14. Not contagious
15. Not cancer
16. Occur most commonly with viral infections
17. Do not eat hot or spicy foods if you have a canker sore
