Camp David, first known as Hi-Catoctin, is the name of a presidential mountain retreat. Camp David is located in the Catoctin Mountain Park in Fredrick County, Maryland.
Camp David sits on a rustic 125 acres, within driving distance of Washington D.C. and 20 miles southwest of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.
The Naval Support Facility Thurmont, was originally built as a federal camp for government employees in 1935 and opened in 1938. President Franklin D. Roosevelt gave instructions for a complete revamping in 1942, making Camp David a luxurious presidential get way, and renaming it Shangri-La. Later Dwight D. Eisenhower gave Camp David its present name in honor of his grandson.
Camp David serves as a safe and private retreat offering solitude and tranquility for first families.
