Call of Duty 2: Big Red One is the fifth incarnation of the Call of Duty series, a set of World War II first-person shooter games. Call of Duty 2: Big Red One differs from previous Call of Duty games because it only focuses on a single division.

The game focuses solely on the US 1st infantry division, which was nicknamed the Big Red One. The 1st infantry division invaded and liberated North Africa, invaded Sicily, and eventually landed on Omaha Beach and invaded Germany.

Players play as the same soldier throughout campaign mode. The game spans Africa, Sicily and Central Europe. Players must defeat enemy soldiers and complete missions for each stage that they enter. The game progresses more linearly than many of the other Call of Duty games.¹ Players can view the progression of their mission on the map screens. These screens show the route of the player's company.² The alternate between open warfare, trenches, and raids. There is no multiplayer for the GameCube. The PS2 and Xbox versions allow up to sixteen players and offers the following modes:

3. Capture the flag
4. Domination

Players can choose from over a dozen maps and set which maps they want to put into rotation. There have been lagging problems on the PS2 server.³
