Bulimia Nervosa

Bulimia nervosa, also referred to as just bulimia, is an eating disorder where you go through episodes of binge eating then make yourself vomit or do excessive exercise to rid yourself of the calories. Someone with bulimia is obsessed with their body shape and weight. Bulimia can be difficult to overcome because its not only about food but also about your self image.

Physical Symptoms

Some of the physical symptoms of bulimia include sores, scars or calluses on the knuckles, dehydration, fatigue, damaged teeth or gums, swollen salivary glands in the cheeks, sores in the throat and mouth, abnormal bowel movements and bloating.

Emotional and Behavioral Symptoms

Some of the emotional and behavioral symptoms of bulimia include constant dieting, a feeling that you can't control your eating behavior, eating till you are in pain, misuse of laxatives, diuretics and or enemas, depression and anxiety.

Complications

There are serious health complications associated with bulimia even to the point of death. Some of these complications include anemia, tooth decay, heart problems such as heart failure and arrhythmias. Gastrointestinal problems such as constipation, bloating and nausea can also result from bulimia. Not only does bulimia cause health problems it also can affect mental health. Some of these issues include depression, anxiety disorders, drug abuse, alcohol abuse, excessive stress and even suicide.
