Guide Note
Brooklyn is one of the five boroughs that make up New York City and was named after the Dutch town of Breukelen. Brooklyn is the most popular of the boroughs and continues to maintain a character of its own. Brooklyn has many well-defined neighborhoods and many of them date back to the early 1600s.
Most people in Brooklyn work outside of the borough, but local companies like Phitzer, the pharmaceutical company and the Brooklyn Navy Yard, keep over 3,000 jobs local.
Brooklyn was once home to the MLB team, the Brooklyn Dodgers. Established in 1883, they won five pennants by 1955 and then relocated to Los Angeles in 1957, where today they are known as the Los Angeles Dodgers.
