Gionta was drafted 82nd overall in the 1998 NHL draft by the New Jersey Devils. He did not join the NHL right away and played for Boston College for three seasons after the draft. He joined the Devils in 2001 for his NHL debut and split his first season between the Devils and their American Hockey League affiliate, the Albany River Rats. Elias earned a full roster spot with the Devils in 2002 and continued to play in the NHL until the 2004-05 lockout, when he played 15 games with the River Rats. After returning to the Devils after the lockout, Gionta was selected as the team's MVP by fellow Devils teammates.
