Early Life

Filner earned a degree in chemistry and followed it with a PhD in the history of science while at Cornell. As a history professor at San Diego State University, he ran for San Diego school board in the late 1970s. By the early '80s, Filner was president of the board.

Political Career

In 1992, Filner quit his job at San Diego State to run for Congress. He won a seat as Representative for the 51st district and was re-elected six consecutive times. He is Chairman of the Committee on Veterans' Affairs and is a member of the Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure.
